Val d'Uina (Sesvennapass)

Val d'Uina

The Val d'Uina is considered one of the most impressive mountain bike routes in the Alps. The variant via Fuorcla Sesvenna is the crisp version.

Description

From Scuol, take the mountain road up to S-charl, although you should consider taking the PostBus shuttle - the ascent is still hard enough. This leads along an alpine road to Alp Sesvenna and then in a mixture of pushing and riding towards Fuorcla Sesvenna. The last section of the ascent is a steep trail on which the bike has to be carried. As tough as the ascent is, the descent through the high alpine terrain to the Sesvenna hut is a lot of fun. This is the starting point for the Val d'Uina route, which turns into the famous rocky trail a little after the Schlinig Pass. The trail here is blasted into a huge rock face and you should push your bike for safety reasons. After the tricky sections, the path becomes increasingly flowing and runs wonderfully through Swiss stone pine forests to Alp Uina Dadaint. The next alpine path is as steep as it is fast and you return to Scuol via Sur En through the wild lower Val d'Uina.

A dream in terms of landscape and nature. From S-Charl to the Sesvenna Pass, the bike has to be pushed and carried a lot. Unfortunately, there is not much riding down to the Sesvenna hut, which spoils the whole experience.

A worthwhile tour!
If you love technical riding and are willing to carry your bike from time to time, you'll feel right at home on this tour.

EXACTLY ;o) !! We took the tour on 02.07.2018 under the studs.
Great tour! Strenuous ascent from S-charl to the Sesvenna Pass (so the post bus from Scuol is really recommended), technically great descent to the Sesvenna hut, fine food in the Sesvenna hut, magnificent Uina Gorge, which we also mastered on foot and finally the undemanding gravel path descent to Sur En. An adventurous, recommendable tour for technically experienced skiers!

As we had planned to climb the Fimber Pass the next day, we decided to take the Postbus to
S- charl as an ascent aid. This turned out to be a good decision.
The route through the valley to S-charl is long and you still have enough reserves for the ascent to the pass and for the descent.
From a scenic point of view, the ascent by bike would certainly be worthwhile.
From S-charl, an alpine path with loose, coarse gravel leads to Alp Sesvenna . From there, running passages alternate with pushing passages. The closer you get to the Sesvenna pass, the more pushing is required.
Below the pass is the most arduous section, with what feels like a vertical climb up to Lake Sesvenna and from there another few meters to the pass.

From the pass, a fun single trail begins, sometimes flowing, sometimes blocked, sometimes on a gravel slope. As soon as the Sesvenna hut becomes visible, the trail becomes increasingly rocky.
From the hut, the trail begins to the start of the gorge, initially a wide alpine road and then a singletrail.
The path through the gorge is 80 cm -1 m wide and has railings in very few places,
Those who are not free from giddiness should avoid the path. If you ride the trail, it does not allow for any mistakes.
Oncoming traffic is also to be expected, many bikers use the Val d'unia in the opposite direction as a crossing point
heading south.
At the end of the gorge, follow the alpine road down into the valley. Always keep your eyes open. At some points, small hiking trails (not marked) branch off from the road, which ride parallel to the road through the forest and are a lot of fun.

All in all, a top tour in alpine terrain with wonderful scenery, a tough ascent and single trails in all variations and difficulty levels.
We'll be back...

one man's frustration is another man's pleasure ;) the last ascent was really hard, but my 301 and I had a lot of fun on the way down 8)
