Fuorcla Champatsch

Fuorcla Champatsch

The route over the Fuorcla Campatsch is one of the most extraordinary routes in the Lower Engadine, and the descent is the well-deserved reward for the pushing passages on the ascent.

Description

The tour starts at the mountain station of the Motta-Naluns cable cars. From Scuol, you can also ascend under your own steam via Ftan and Prui. A steep gravel road leads towards Chamanna Naluns near the reservoir, which you leave a little below to reach the Champatsch chairlift via the new path built in 2020. The remaining 300 vertical meters to Fuorcla Champatsch are a mixture of pushing passages and sections that can be ridden again and again. The effort is worth it, especially because of the extraordinary rocky landscape. The crossing is the starting point of the long and varied descent into Val Sinestra. You reach Griosch at the foot of the famous Fimber Pass and head downhill from here to Zuort. The route continues over several suspension bridges and a first-class trail to the bridge at the Hotel Sinestra and on to Ramosch on the high-level trail above the gorge. The route then follows the Inn back to Scuol.

Becomes more and more of a marble run. Too bad. The trail crew was just removing stones that actually belong on the trail. But 99% of the bikers seem to like it.
I don't understand why you have to level everywhere. But not like this. Still a top tour in terms of scenery

Beautiful tour. Can be combined with Alp Clünas Tour. Very rocky and rough. With EMTB almost 100% rideable with technical skills. With an organic bike you will probably have to push a lot on the way up. From the highest point there are many hairpin bends, but rideable.

"Due to damage and landslides, the hiking trail between Sinestra and Chant Ajüd (Ramosch) is being rerouted via Vna until further notice. The detour is signposted.

Rode today. Snow-free and in top condition. From Val Sinestra the trail is closed due to a landslide. Unfortunately not marked earlier, so you could have ridden out of the valley on a higher path

Rode today July 11. Still about 200m of snowfields on both sides of the Fuorcla Champatsch. But already going very well, on short sections at the top the path was a stream, very fun to ride. Super tour

Rode today. Zero snow. An incredibly scenic tour. If you ride an S2 smoothly, you can do the tour, you will walk some parts. The descent from the Fuorcla is winding and slippery due to a lot of almost sandy material on hard ground. However, you can descend without any problems and the trail is not exposed anywhere. In Val Sinestra you will also have to walk down a few short sections with steep, blocked bends.

We did the tour on 17.06.23 and were allowed to ride our bike around in the snow for about an hour - so it's better to do it a little later in the year.

The ascent is as described in the tour description - the last 300 meters are pushed.

The first part of the descent is wonderful. Beautiful trails paired with a great view. The last part along the river was rather flat with many small climbs, which you had to push the bike up.

Conclusion: Good ascent with some pushing. The first part of the descent was great, the second part was OK.

Rode the tour on 07.10.2022. The last 150m before the Fuorcla was partly over snow. The descent from the Fuorcla was fun over a closed but grippy snow field in the fall line. A wonderfully colorful autumn atmosphere awaited us below!
In the description of the tour, it would also be worth mentioning the last part, the "high trail over the gorge on to Ramosch", as a strenuous trail section interrupted by many difficult (pushing and carrying) uphill passages. All in all, however, a mega tour.

Ridden at the weekend in combination with the Alp Clünas tour as an additional round before Fuorcla Champatsch. A new trail is currently being built in Clünas, but is not yet finished. Trail condition is generally very good, you can see that the trail crew has made some places more rideable. Fuorcla Champatsch is also easy to do, we really liked the trail from Val Sinetra, but it still needs a bit of energy. It was quite damp and therefore slippery and there were also a few cow-related mud patches. All in all a great tour, thanks for the suggestion. We'll do it again.

We rode the tour today on 26.6.2022. We rode to the rear ski lift in glorious weather. We had to push for the first third up to the pass; after that we were able to ride most of it.
The descent was very attractive, partly technical at the top and very flowy further down. We took our first break in Griosch :).
The descent over the suspension bridges to the Hotel Val Sinestra was very challenging but easily manageable. After the hotel, the trail became "arduous": in many places we had to push or carry the bike: there had obviously been a lot of burial due to storms recently (definitely not suitable for eBikes - which makes us happy :) ). After the rock band, it became really flowy until the main road.
All in all: very nice and worthwhile tour

The tour has been significantly upgraded by the trail crew. On the ascent, everything is rideable except for about 50m. On the descent, the trail has also been improved, even if there are still steep sections between 2500 and 2300 that are very exposed to erosion by water and whose condition will probably deteriorate again soon.
At point 1942, I would stay on the road and descend directly to Zuort. The singletrail after point 1860 has been destroyed by cows and is currently a huge muddy mess.

I would have liked to have marked the critical points you described, but my entire GPX track downloaded here only has 1361 points.....

Awesome tour. Trail was well maintained - no more ruts.

The exit involves some pushing, but it's ok for a transition to 2700m.

Also the descent: everything is easy to ride thanks to the maintenance (of course, still 4/6). A passage through the gorge is not always quite so flowy and you have to carry the bike for a few meters (possibly because the lines had to be rerouted again and again due to descents).

super tour, wonderful, rode today and almost snow-free

We rode the tour on 09.09.2020. The climb up to Fuorcla Champatsch is tough and at times you have to push. The descent is very beautiful from top to bottom, varied and mostly rideable. Shortly after the Fuorcla, the trail is partly under water and yes, you have to be careful with the pedals in places. Would do the tour again in a heartbeat.

We rode the tour today and were thrilled...!
During the ascent on the steep forest road we wondered from time to time whether this was already the pushing section. :-) but no - crisp but all rideable up to the Champatsch ski lift. Then the pushing or even carrying starts. When carrying up, you can get an idea of how it goes down on the other side of the summit. Amazingly, however, most of it is somehow rideable. Suspension up, saddle down and open the brakes (as best you can). Extremely challenging but unique. Sometimes you have to find your way and share it with the water again and again.
From there on, where it gets a bit "meadowier", it becomes no less challenging. The comment below from Yeti is still correct. It is difficult and very challenging to keep on track here. But it is precisely this challenge that makes this tour so special. Only suitable for bike adventurers. The tour doesn't even have 1,000 m but you're pretty exhausted in the evening. Every single meter is challenging.
In Griosch there is an old alpine innkeeper who runs a kind of kiosk. Wonderful atmosphere and alp cheese with salsiz. A little further down there is also a hotel with a restaurant. Anyone who now thinks the "roughest" part is over is mistaken! The forest trails are a lot smoother to ride, but you have to concentrate 200% on the trail. A constant up and down to the Inn. A short section was still closed. But this can be bypassed a little further up, which is super cool. Simply follow the trail and then head back down to the river at the next opportunity.
The landscape on this tour is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, with the endless and challenging trails, you forget to enjoy them from time to time.
Conclusion: Extremely demanding, both technically and in terms of fitness. But if you love it, you absolutely have to do this tour! We give it a HAMMER...!

I rode the trail today 05.10.2018. Unfortunately, it is in a very poor condition. It is barely there because of all the rubble. In the sections on the meadow, it gets so deep that the pedals threaten to collide all the time.
At the bottom of the gorge there are various landslides that force you to take detours. I would definitely adapt the description. It would be best if the author rode this tour again.
Of course the scenery is great!

We rode the tour a good 2 weeks ago. Beautiful scenery, but very rough after Fuorcla Champatsch up to Pra San Flurin. Noflow :-( You can also stop for refreshments in Griosch and the earth pyramids in Val Sinestra are worth a visit.
