Lais da Rims

Lais da Rims, Scuol

This is where the really big trails come to life. The tour over the Lais da Rims near Scuol with the final descent through the Val d'Uina is an extraordinary spectacle. Good riding technique and decent surefootedness are required for the ascent.

Description

It all starts quite harmlessly with the Postbus ride from Scuol to S-charl. Then it's all about muscle power, and up to Alp Sesvenna this is nothing special. From there, the bike rests on your shoulders and you climb up the steep hollow into the rocky world of the Lais da Rims. Seen from below, it is hard to imagine that there is a path leading up here. But it is possible, the path is steep, in the uppermost segment it also rides over smaller rock steps and is secured with holding chains on individual sections. If you want to get up here, you need to be sure-footed! And a good level of fitness, as the carrying passage rides almost 800 meters up to Lajet de Lischana. This beautifully situated mountain lake is the starting point of the subsequent singletrail ascent to Fuorcla da Rims (2952 meters above sea level), but from here it is completely rideable. The scenery is phenomenal, a kind of lunar landscape surrounded by rock towers and interspersed with small lakes. And in the middle of it all is the downhill trail towards Val d'Uina. This is alpine and demanding up to Alp Sursass (S3 to S4 level), but a treat for experienced mountain bikers who enjoy technical challenges.

Finally, Alp Sursass is reached and with it the start of the famous rocky trail through the Val d'Uina. For safety reasons, it is advisable to push your bike here - riding errors can be fatal in this section. The experience of the route in the middle of the rock face is also impressive on foot! After the rock section, the danger zones are overcome and the path winds its way down to the (catered) Alp Uina Dadaint. Here it's time to raise a glass to the extraordinary trail day before the return journey to Scuol. To do this, you roll down the gravel road through the Val d'Uina to Sur En and then cycle back to Scuol on the cycle route. If you don't have enough energy, hop on the local bus in Sur En and ride back to Scuol (bike transport is easily available).

Can't agree with the previous comment, in my opinion there is no real risk of falling. If you are sure-footed, you can make it up. Sure, it's steep, strenuous and has a few chains, but overall it's doable. We descended via the Lischanna hut, between Lajet de Lischanna and Fuorcla da Rims there's still quite a lot of snow, but it's doable.

I did the ascent from Alp Sesvenna via Fora da l'Aua independently of this ride tour report in August 22. Sure, the ascent is doable, but does it really make sense to present something like this to a wide audience as a tour suggestion? I don't think so and can't recommend the ascent as part of a bike tour and wouldn't do the tour again. In the end, of course, everyone has to decide for themselves...
For potential successors, it is certainly good to know that the key section is steep, sandy and rocky terrain. Some places are equipped with ropes, others are not. If you stumble, slip or make a mistake, in the worst case you and your bike will find yourself a few hundred meters lower down...

Then to the descent... I don't know the 800m to Alp Sursass. Val d'Uina is certainly a "must", but there's not much more to it in terms of biking. A bit of pushing through the actual gorge, then another 300m of trail and the rest on forest roads to Sur En.
The descent through Val Lischana offers much more biking!
