Fuorcla da Rims

Fuorcla da Rims (Scuol)

The tour from Scuol to the Lais da Rims and over the Fuorcla da Rims into Val Lischana is one of the most beautiful but toughest mountain bike tours in the Lower Engadine.

Description

The tour starts inconspicuously on the cycle route from Scuol out of the valley. It starts in Sur Ents: the ascent through the Val d'Uina is steep and rough in places, but easily manageable. The alpine road ends at Uina Dadaint and turns into a rideable singletrail. You are only forced off the bike below the well-known rocky passage and push the bike through the imposing valley. Once this has been conquered, things really get going. Now the bike is shouldered and you fight your way past the high alpine lake landscape of the Lais da Rims up to the Fuorcla da Rims, the barren passage below the Piz Lischana. The reward for your exertions follows. On the single trail through the Val Lischana, you cover almost 1700 meters in altitude, initially very technical and rough with a short foot section, then increasingly smooth and fun and finally a veritable flow trail to the Gurlaina sports facility on the outskirts of Scuol.

I did the tour alone on August 8th
I took the bus from Scuol to S-Charl and had a very friendly conversation with the bus driver, who originally comes from the east of Germany. Best regards if anyone gets to ride with him again.
In S-Charl I went to Alpe Sesvenna (2100m) (fill up with WATER) and on to Fuorcla Sesvenna (2824m). Most of the way you have to push, a small part you have to carry. The descent to the Sesvenna hut is rideable from the pass but challenging in parts. A few times you have to struggle because the path is washed out.
The Sesvenna hut is being rebuilt and there was no water. I had to take water from the river that runs through the pasture area. In retrospect a very tricky decision... everything went well
Left off Ri. Uina gorge and a little later steeply up to Fuorcla da Rim (2935m). A long climb (800m) and I had to put the bike down a few times because my shoulder hurt. The Ibis Ripmo is not one of the light bikes ;-)
Descent as already described 1700m down to Scuol. Mega.
Long, lonely, exhausting, and scenically unique tour...

Crank 800 m, push 200 m, carry 800 m. If you want to get up there, you have to be able to carry something. You will be rewarded with the wonderful landscape at the Lais da Rims and a magnificent descent.
On the Fuorcla, you can set off immediately following the altitude without having to climb the ridge again.
The descent to the hut is steep and technical, but mostly rideable apart from the rocky section at around 2700. After the hut, the route is a little easier but still technical.
Instead of riding over to Alp San John, you can continue down to the road and then turn right onto the black trail to the fork and then left to Sur En.

Today, July 13, via Firma d'Aua to Fuorcla da Rims (see Lais da Rims Tour). At the top there is still some snow, but doable, the way from Val d'Uina still looked difficult, in a week it should be possible. The descent to the hut is quite difficult, and there are still a few snowfields, but it's already easy to ride. Top, especially after the hut!

Dear Thomas Giger (about not being suitable for eMTBs), I did this tour today with a 25 kg eMTB, it's absolutely fine and just as much fun. But yes, I agree with you in the sense that this is certainly not for everyone. Only those who are really fit, able to ride uphill and know how to use the push assist properly will enjoy it. And of course, anyone who goes up to almost 3000 m above sea level in July should know what to expect. With this in mind, have fun and bombastic impressions of a truly epic tour.

PS: I'm happy to answer any questions in the comments.

We did the tour on 18.06.23 - don't do it. We needed 3 hours for the last 300 m in the snow. Before the snow started to thicken, there were already a lot of pushing passages. AAABut the descent is second to none. It was really great single trails. Not extremely difficult, but nice and challenging after such a long climb.

Ascent: 900hm to val d'unia rideable, the rest you push or carry the bike.
Descent: really sexy, cool trails with little traffic.

Tour ridden on 24.07.2022. An incredible tour - for those who like to push and carry the bike. It is worth making a detour to Piz Lischana before the descent to the hut, the bike can be deposited at point 3043, for example. Everything up to the hut is rideable except for 3-4 sections. The trail from the hut to the valley is technically demanding but rideable throughout.

I can recommend this with an overnight stay in the Lischana hut, so that you are back to full strength for the descent. The staff are very friendly and the food was delicious. Thank you Ursula & team.

We did the tour on 10.09.2020 and combined it with the Sesvenna Pass (webcode 1518). This means taking the post bus to S-charl and then a long ascent with lots of hike and carry passages to Fuorcla Sesvenna with a great and racy descent to the Sesvenna hut and just before Val d'Uina. Then it was up again to Fuorcla da Rims, again with lots of hike and carry passages. The descent from Fuorcla da Rims to Scuol is fantastic, technically demanding but largely easy to ride. The tour offers incredible panoramic views and demands a lot from you!

15 years since the first time, we tackled this tour again. As correctly noted in the description, the tour actually starts after the Val d'Uina gorge. You have to be prepared to carry your bike for longer periods of time. The possible routes after the Val d'Uina gorge to the pass crossing are very few. But the ascent also offers plenty of scenery. The descent is partly unrideable in the upper part. Afterwards, however, there is a great trail down to the Inn. Not forgetting the good cake in the Lischana hut! And it was worth it again!

In July 2017, I planned this tour via Komoot, attracted by the long descent peppered with S3 and S2 trails.
First of all, this tour is very hard but you will be highly rewarded.
Important note about this tour:
Very long and tough shoulder sections.
Technically very demanding, especially up to the Lischana hut (approx. 2 to 3 carrying passages), then it continues in S2 mode.
A free tip from me:
get yourself a pair of good mountain bike shoes.
I was on the trail with hard soles and had almost no grip and support on these long shoulder sections.
Plan enough time.
Bike tips: Rather a light bike because of the shoulder sections. Whether hard trail or fully is always a matter of taste. In my case, I was on a hard trail with Hansdampf 2.35 tires.
I will definitely do this tour again
