Rheinschlucht Supertour

Rheinschlucht

The Rhine Gorge is considered the Grand Canyon of Graubünden and is an unparalleled natural spectacle. With Flims as the starting point, the gorge can be packed into a singletrail tour of superlatives. The route first leads down to Tamins and then through the entire gorge to Ilanz.

Description

From Flims, you initially head towards Lake Cauma, but pass it and then head towards Conn. Here you should make a detour to the viewing platform, from where large parts of the later route through the Rhine Gorge can be inspected from above. Now head down to Pintrun, climb up to Digg and then follow the signposted mountain bike route (260) to Tamins and on to the hamlet of Campagna. Here you leave the signposted route to the right and later reach the road between Bonaduz and Versam at an electricity station. Cross the road and ascend for a short distance on a forest road. At a left-hand hairpin bend, keep right and after a few meters the gravel road turns into a magnificent single trail. This leads high above the Rhine Gorge to Pastogn, where you reach the official route (260) again. A serpentine trail now leads to the Versam bridge, from where you climb up to Versam on the road. The route now follows the road towards the train station for a while, turning right at a shooting range and descending directly into the Rhine Gorge on a steep and challenging trail. This is where the world-class trail through the gorge begins. Upstream, you always stay on the southern bank of the Rhine, riding up and down until you reach the Versam and Valendas railroad station, and finally a flowing riverside trail with some tricky sections to Castrisch. Before the railroad underpass, turn left and follow the trail to Illanz - a fun and flowing end to this unique singletrail route. You can get back to Flims by post bus.

In 2014, Flims issued a recommendation on the routes from Mutta Sura to Conn and in the entire Rhine Gorge that mountain bikers should not ride these trails between 10 am and 4 pm. In the winter months, the route should not be used at all.

12.08.2023, very nice tour with partly crisp descents, highly recommended

We did the tour on Die. 30.05.2023 rode it. It was a very nice spring tour with many technical and tricky sections, but also rather boring but scenic sections.

Fortunately, there were very few hikers on the way. The hikers we met were mostly friendly. So were we, of course, as we always gave them the right of way and said a friendly "grüetzi" :-) .

The trail down from Versam to the Rhine (29.1 km) is actually very difficult. After about 50 meters in altitude, we turned back, as this section is more for enduro riders or bikers who take part in the Red Bull Rampage.

Instead, we stopped at the nice "Café zur Einkehr" for a delicious piece of cake to fortify us for the final stage along the Rhine. This route is nutritious and very fun to ride.

For the return journey to Flims Waldhaus, we took the Postbus with a very nice and patient driver.

Overall, the tour is beautiful and can be recommended.

Rode the tour today, July 23, 2022. Can agree with other commentators. With the exception of a short section, the route from Flims to Tamins is somewhat boring as it is technically undemanding. I saw trails turning into the path from time to time on the left and right. There would certainly be opportunities to incorporate them. The section from Versam down to the Rhine (from km 29.1) is extremely dangerous and, in my opinion, not rideable due to the constant risk of falling. I would skip this section next time. I didn't see the driving ban mentioned in the comments anywhere. Although I gave way to all the hikers, one or two of them seemed a bit annoyed.

Hello everyone!
Me and my son started the tour from Bonaduz. From the direction of Versamertobel. The section above the road on the hiking trail was super beautiful. Well, we still had some snow.
But the stretch along the Rhine to Ilanz was meeeega beautiful!
We then took the route to Flims-Conns and then to Trin-Digg and back to the starting point after Bonaduz.
All in all, a very nice tour, seeing the Swiss Grand Canyon from both sides and capturing some beautiful pictures!

Very nice tour overall. As already described, there are many hikers in the Rhine Gorge. However, I couldn't find any offers for bikers. The tour would be better in spring or late fall, as there are fewer hikers. Tip: We started at 7am in Flims. We had the route to ourselves :-)

Very scenic tour. In my opinion, it is not possible to ride down from Versam in part, as it is relatively dangerous and it is no longer possible to take hikers into consideration when riding this section - it is better to take an alternative route.
There are lots of hikers, families, etc. along the banks of the Rhine, which is tedious for everyone involved and therefore not recommended. I'm not so sure whether you are allowed to ride through there at all, according to the map here http://www.rheinschlucht.ch/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rheinschlucht_Fl… rather not: "The hiking trail along the Rhine is not a bike route".

It would be great - and conducive to the well-meaning coexistence of bikers and hikers - if the author of this tour would mention that the Rhine Gorge is closed to bikers during the day (from 9 am to 4 pm) from July to October.
So the best time of year is certainly not May to October, but November to June at best...

Nice tour. There may be a few more trails on the descent from Flims.
Super trails in the direction of Versam.
All in all, a great tour that is still rideable in the fall.

Hammer tour, a bit of everything. (Trail moderate). Super beautiful scenery and gpx trak also accurate.
