Crest da Tiarms

Crest da Tiarms (Laax)

A beautiful back can also be enchanting! This is especially true for the tour over the Crest da Tiarms. While the majority of mountain bikers head straight down into the valley from Crap Sogn Gion in Laax, there is a delightful and varied descent down to Ilanz on the back of the mountain.

Description

The route starts at the top station of the gondola lift on Crap Sogn Gion. If you want, you can ski up here under your own steam, but this part is usually done in the gondola. Now you climb up on wide gravel tracks to Crap Masegn, the starting point for the long descent over the southern mountain ridge. You pass the Crest da Tiarms and have to overcome a short section on foot in a rocky passage. The descent to Alp da Schnaus is fun and varied, then on to Alp Muota and a few meters further down on a small road before crossing the narrow Val da Siat. Finally, there are a few more meters of ascent to the village center of Siat. Here you enter the final bouquet of the tour: a first-class singletrail down to Rueun. Finally, you roll via Schnaus to Ilanz and hop on the Postbus to get back to Laax.

We did the tour on Saturday, after a few days of rain, but it had been dry for weeks before that. The trails were mostly grippy and easy to ride, and the cow pasture was only moderately damp. We got a little lost there and had to find the trail again. I didn’t like the detour to Ual da Mulin, since we had to push our bikes for most of the trail. The descent from Siat into the valley is great. I’d also rate the technical difficulty of the tour more like a 4 out of 6.

So opinions can differ.
We did this trail on an e-bike and rate it as one of the best we've ridden so far.
Of course there are some climbs, but with the appropriate caution and joint help, they are easily manageable. For us, such adventures are simply part of a good bike tour. Fortunately, we didn't experience any muddy sections and probably caught a great time window that didn't include any previous major rainfall.
In any case, we would do this tour again in a heartbeat.

I did it yesterday with a bio bike, the Crest da Tiarms part is quite doable, a couple of points where walking is needed. After the fork to Muntanaus is all mud and cow sh*t, turning left and return to Laax is also a good option there.
Afterwards, the black trail parallel to the river Ual da Mulin is nice, but half of it has to be walked.
However a different nice tour in the Laax area.

Did the tour with the e-bike the day before yesterday.

The sign with the closure is still there, but the trail in question is not part of this tour.

The small climbing sections at the start are tough but manageable on an e-bike.

The swampy cow pasture described is not so great, but can be overcome in 15 minutes.

Some of the trails are really tough, which I would also classify as S4.
But you could avoid them.

All in all, a challenging tour off the beaten track.

Hello, wanted to do the tour on 02.09.2024 until there was a note at the entrance of the descent... Due to falling rocks and
mudslides the route is closed. Ride at your own risk. Just for your information

In the alpine upper part there is a carrying passage when going up and down. Otherwise very rideable and fun. But you have to like it a bit blocked. The traverse from P1903 to Alp Muota is really tedious. Today, two thirds were complete swamp, trampled by cows....despite very little rainfall. Finding the path was difficult in parts. But I did find porcini mushrooms :). Then the detour through the Ual da Mulin is a disaster. Komoot gives this part an S4! It starts great....and then sh... Next time I recommend the hiking trail to Ruschein-Ilanz, all S1-2.
I'll certainly do the tour again, just be prepared to push in the swamp. Phenomenal at the top. I would suggest ride to advise the tour with difficulty 4, definitely not 3 out of 6 from my point of view.

I really won't do this tour a second time; the intermediate section over cow pastures feels like it takes forever and is not rideable. Neither the beginning nor the end can make up for that.

13.08.2023, the video is a cheat pack, steep tour with very difficult sections, the middle section is very tiring, nice final descent, a long one

I rode the tour the week before last. The comments are sometimes helpful, but sometimes not. Personally, I thought the tour was great. I like it adventurous (sometimes carrying the bike, technical sections etc.) and away from the hustle and bustle. Flow trails are not really my thing, as they are usually a bit boring. Nevertheless, I wouldn't ride the Crest da Tiarms a second time. There are a lot of places that - at least for me (and I would describe myself as a solid biker) - are not rideable. So the fun factor is rather limited. It's ok for the panorama and the adventure, but not so much for the riding fun.

As an intermediate biker, I can confirm that the tour is a fantastic alternative to the well-known Flims bike trails. You have to accept that you have to descend from time to time. Highly recommended! It's also a nice challenge without the cable car, just under 1800m.
IMPORTANT: Only do it after a rain-free hot spell. This is the main fun factor!!!

Cool tour! It must be dry... No rain for a few days...
Then it's perfect!

I cannot recommend this tour. The video is a clear deception. The swamp, for example, feels like crossing the Everglades in Florida. Water everywhere. Where you think you recognize a trail, you just see deep ruts from bikes. Probably mainly RIDE readers. Just when you hope you've finally left the swamp behind you, the next bit of swamp appears. You quickly spend what feels like an hour in this way. Further down it gets more fun again but then has some parts (e.g. along the stream) that are clearly more like riding technique "3". Then, in Ilanz, at some point there are only small post buses that don't take bikes!

I agree with the positive comments. Very varied in terms of landscape and trails. In addition, the descent feels much longer than it really is. Started in Falera this time, but will start in Laax next time, as I find leaving civilization and the leisurely ascent into the alpine landscape incredibly beautiful. In Rueun I will choose the cycle route along the stream, which is a bit more relaxing at the end of the tour.

Can only support the words of lea.stoll and gamper! I rode the trail plus the ascent from Falera and the last ascent back to Falera last week. Apart from a few meters, the tour is easy to ride for very good bikers. Apart from 2-3 small sections, it's an absolutely fantastic tour. Bravo.

I think the very different ratings are partly the result of different expectations of the tour. Anyone expecting a developed flow trail will certainly be disappointed and is better served by the Never End or Runca Trail. The tour largely follows a red and white mountain hiking trail and is not a developed bike trail, which is why you should expect to push or carry your bike from time to time. The upper section is beautiful to ride, but requires precise riding technique on the narrow paths, some of which are washed out. In my opinion, the top section up to Kuhweide is the most beautiful and an absolute highlight in terms of scenery. The middle section is certainly the least appealing part of the tour, quite boggy and not rideable in places, but the scenery makes up for it. The lowest part in the forest is then flowy again, but also has a few more technical passages with off-camber roots (especially when wet). Overall, I found the tour absolutely worthwhile, if you are looking for an alpine tour away from the mainstream with some variety and a great panorama, you've come to the right place.

I would like to take up the cudgels for this tour!
True, in the Muntanaus area the path across the marshy meadow is sometimes difficult to find.
However, it's only about 500m at most, which is not really fun.
The rest of the tour is extremely varied and varies between technical challenges in the S3 category and flowing sections in the S1 category.
If you are riding your bike in alpine terrain, you have to reckon with some (mostly individual) unrideable sections. However, to demonize the whole tour because of 5% bad sections is wrong.
If you are looking for a tour in Laax that is not similar to a highway with lots of variety, you will be happy with the Crest da Tiarm tour.
The lines in Laax are better suited to less experienced bikers.
We certainly had a lot of fun.
Thanks to Ride.ch for the many hours of research and the huge range of tours!

From Crap Masegn to Alp Schnaus I think it's still quite cool, bumpy and possibly more difficult than indicated but rideable.
From Alp Schnaus to Siat there are really great things, especially through the ravine towards Mulin you really have to keep your head on a swivel and sometimes push. The trail from Siat is really cool again!!!
PS: Check the post bus times in Ilanz, sometimes there is no bus for 2 hours.

We were pretty disillusioned by the tour. First you carry your bike up to the Crest de Tiarm and then down again on fixed ropes on the other side. This is followed by a good trail up to Alp da Schnaus. There is no real trail further on to Alp Muota. You pass this section on cow paths, pushing your bike for the most part. I can't recommend this tour either.

Thanks for your comments, community is everything!

I agree with the comments above. Short flowy sections, most of it is a cramp. Not worth it at all. The fact that a video was made for this tour is a mystery to me and gives a false impression. Conclusion: you can do it, but you definitely don't have to.

After the ridge, there is a rather wet, swampy section in the Muntanaus area with poor path guidance. Apart from the ridge and the last section to Siat, the tour is average at best.

Between Crest da Tiarms and Siat, the route offers few flowing trails and is not recommended. The best part of the tour follows after Siat.
