Piz Mundaun Enduro
Description
The starting point of the enduro tour is Ilanz train station. Once there, hitch your bike to the Postbus and ride comfortably to Surcuolm Valata. Now it's time to pedal: Just under 400 meters of altitude difference have to be covered to the second chairlift section Cuolm Sura, from where the last 500 meters of altitude difference to Piz Mundaun pass by with ease. The first part of the descent rides via Cuolm Sura. After this warm-up, the route continues on single trails. Alternating between open and wooded terrain of moderate difficulty, it becomes more challenging after Marschaga in the direction of Flond. This is followed by a traverse, a mix of easy climbs and mostly descents, to Luven. Now it's time for the final section, crossing the main road several times past the old Protestant parish church of Sogn Martin and continuing on trails to the edge of the village.
Tips:
- Half a day is usually enough for the tour. If you still have energy and time, you can tackle the same ascent a second time and then continue the classic Piz Mundaun tour.

After the post bus ride from Ilanz to Valata, the route climbs up to Cuolm Sura. With the exception of the upper part Cuolm Sura- Piz Mundaun, the tour is highly recommended (unfriendly train drivers). The part from Cuolm Sura down to Flound is 1AAAA! Natural trails, challenging sections alternate seamlessly with flowing stretches. The path down from the Vigiel farm no longer exists. As the path from Flond to Luven is currently (August 2024) closed due to the risk of falling rocks just before Luven, we recommend riding past Hof Vigiel and then turning left onto the forest path at point 1151. The short but tough climb that follows is then compensated by a cool descent from Clavau Niev down to Luven. All in all, a very beautiful and absolutely worthwhile tour!
Option: The ascent via Luven to the Bündner Rigi junction is easy to manage on asphalt. You can also continue the ride to Cuolm Sura, where you can change to the chairlift (17.- without guest card and free with guest card) or ride your bike to the summit.
The descent to the east to Bündner Rigi makes sense for those who are reasonably technically adept. Then a short ascent and descent back to Cuolm Sura, from where the descent rides along the signposted bike route, which is exciting throughout.
We rode the tour this week. The descent from Piz Mundaun is not worth it at all. The view is magnificent, but the descent is only a short stretch on a trail. The rest is a gravel road. The route to the other side via the summit is a lot more interesting, even if you have to put up with a few sections of pushing on sloping terrain.
From the valley station to Ilanz, on the other hand, it is extremely beautiful and varied!
The path in Flond at the Vigiel farm no longer seems to exist. We rode through the village on the main road in Flond and then took the gravel path back to the "trail".
Info -> recommendation of the tour is from June -> chairlift to Piz Mundaun is only in operation/open from 2.7.22 (as of 4.7.22).
If the route on the gravel road is not exciting enough for you, I can recommend the descent via the hiking trail to the east. A short ascent past the viewing platform, then the path quickly becomes steep and technical. At the fork below the rocky ledge, keep left towards Plitschès. Shortly before Cuolm Sura, you can rejoin the trail.
... small text correction .... (you should read the text again before saving it ....) so: I didn't get the hint from some "beers", but from some "bikers" ...
Some beers told me to make a short version of my video "Downhill from Piz Mundaun to Flond" in addition to the whole ride. Thanks for the tips and here is the 5-minute version .... https://youtu.be/LaS1sBv_cUs .... Enjoy.
NB: Video from Flond to Ilanz will follow this summer.
For those who are interested, I have recorded at least the downhill ride from Piz Mundaun to Flond on a video (Flond - Ilanz follows).
