Churer Joch Rundtour

Trail in Passugg mit Blick auf Chur

The Churer Joch is a first-class mountain bike destination high above Chur and is the focus of this moderate singletrail tour from Lenzerheide.

Description

The start of the tour up to Scharmoin is spent either in the saddle or in the gondola. If you tackle the ascent under your own steam, always follow the forest road. You don't ride all the way to the mountain station and then follow the alpine road northwards, which turns into a single trail at the Heimberg chairlift station. This leads as a high-level trail to Obersäss, followed by a section downhill on a gravel road before mastering the almost 300 meters of altitude difference to the Churer Joch. On the Joch, it is not only worth stopping at the inn but also taking a detour to the summit with its wonderful view down to the town of Chur. From here, there is a very steep trail on a direct route down, but we take the more moderate but no less attractive version to Alp Furgglis and on fun forest trails down to Praden. Due to the lack of attractive singletrail options, you now roll downhill along the road for a while until the forest road to Grida branches off to the left. Follow this road for a while and then turn right onto the trail that eventually rides to Sandboden on the outskirts of Chur. You can get back to Lenzerheide by post bus. If you want to tackle the return journey under your own steam, don't ride all the way down to Chur and take the Polenweg up to Churwalden. Follow the signposted bike routes via Parpan to Valbella and finally back to Lenzerheide.

I rode the tour on Monday and would like to add a few things. As already mentioned in the comment from 13.06.2020, the hiking trail should be followed to Gruoba from the Joch. The track soon runs pathless through steep cow pastures and makes no sense. Between the Furgglis mountain restaurant and Praden, the trail is partially closed according to the track. However, it is easy to find alternatives. According to the track, there is a section between Praden and Grida that is extremely narrow and exposed, which would certainly be classified as a 3-4 in terms of riding technique and not a two. The path is partly slippery and unrideable. With the return trip to Lenzerheide, it's a tough tour that I would also rate higher than two in terms of fitness.

Attention: Mountain restaurant Jochalp currently "permanently closed"! (as of 13.07.2022)

The high-level trail from Scharmoin to Obersäss is very pretty, but there are a few shorter sections where most people will have to push their bikes up. It is also not advisable to follow the ski lift from the Churer Joch as indicated. The hiking trail tracks quickly get lost and you only ruin the bog-like pasture. It is probably better to follow the official bike trail for a while and then follow the hiking trail at Gruoba. The rest of the trail down to Praden is very beautiful in principle, but the lower section is currently extremely muddy and full of holes due to the unfortunate combination of heavy rainfall and lots of cows.
