Rothorn – Furcletta

Furcletta Ramoz Alternativ-Route

The descent from Furcletta to Arosa is considered one of the most beautiful single trails in Graubünden. The variant starting on the Parpaner Rothorn offers even more vertical meters and a different final descent than the original from Alvaneu, but there are also a few more meters of pushing.

Description

Take the Rothorn cable car up to the Parpaner Rothorn. The first descent is a bit rutted, but after a few hundred meters it changes into a challenging but great singletrail towards Alp Sanaspans. Instead of leading to the alp, the route branches off into the pathless trail. From here, it's mostly pushing or carrying up to the Culmet mountain crossing. Apart from a steep and eroded passage, which is better done on foot, the intermediate descent is quite flowy. From the basin, it's only a hundred meters up to the Furcletta. Now the fun begins. You head over the initially steep, then increasingly flowing single trail through the wildly romantic Welschtobel. You pass the Ramozhütte and follow the super trail for the next five kilometers. After a 200-metre ascent from the bottom of the valley to Arosa, you head straight for the Hörnli cable car. Once on the Hörnli, there are two options: The single trail with a carrying passage over the saddle to the left of the Urdenfürggli, which you can also reach comfortably with the Urdenbahn and then push up briefly, but save 180 meters in altitude. Where the original route leads over the Urdenfüggli twister, the alternative route takes you briefly up to the Great White Trail. At the end of the trail, you briefly switch to the feeder road and then turn into the Kuhtanamo Trail, which offers more natural singletrail fun all the way to Parpan. Instead of riding all the way down to Parpan, you keep the altitude and roll back to the valley station of the Rothorn cable car.

Season opening on all the lifts in the Bike Kingdom and we tackled this route straight away. It's worth taking one of the first rides up the Rothorn, because the whole route takes time if you want to enjoy it. The last ascent to point 2614 before the Culmet along the mountain flank is extremely eroded. This is probably also because the path has not been used much since the winter. The first 100m from the Culmet are also impossible to ride and it takes some skill to get down well with the bike. The rest of the tour is simply wonderful as described. A tip for buying a mountain railway ticket: we were sold the special "crossing" ticket for 50.- at the Rothorn valley station with advice. ATTENTION, this ticket does not work for this round trip (Rothorn 2, Hörnliexpress, Urdebahn). The cheapest option is to buy single tickets, especially with a half-fare card. Have fun!

Tour even done with a light e-mountain bike. If you have the right uphill technique, much of the ascent is rideable. Overall, the tour is bumpy and challenging (min. 150mm fork). The descent through the Welschentobel is super! Alongside Val Mora, it is one of the most beautiful valleys in Switzerland.

This Rothorn Furcletta Tour is not for me with my 78 years, but the Rothorn fascinated me and so this week I did a tour from the Rothorn on the wide but rocky path down the southern slope with a unique view, which I can highly recommend to any senior who can ride red trails. It's also an interesting tour for other bikers who aren't the wild ones, like the one who suggested the Rothorn Furcletta Tour. For my category of biker, this Rothorn tour was quite demanding but fantastically beautiful. I recorded the tour on video, edited it and uploaded it to my YouTube channel. The link is:
