Obermutten

The small village of Obermutten has long caused a stir on social media channels. It lies high above Thusis between the Albula Valley and the Schams and is ideal as a mountain bike destination, with two integrated highlights in the form of the Alter Schyn and the Via Mala.

Description

From Thusis, follow the signposted mountain bike route to Sils and Fürstenaubruck and then take the Alten-Schyn trail to the Lenzerheide region. The spectacular trail is technically easy to ride, but at times extremely steep. The passage with the (illuminated) tunnels is a highlight. In Muldain, you then ride down via Zorten to the spectacular Solisbrücke bridge, which forms the start of the long ascent to Obermutten. The little road winds its way up the mountain in many hairpin bends, you pass Mutten and finally reach the truly picturesque Walser village of Obermutten. The descent into the Via Mala begins. First you follow a singletrail over to Samest Sura, then you take a gravel road down to Schams. Unfortunately, there are no sensible singletrail alternatives here. Just before Reischen, keep right and follow the somewhat narrower path to the Rania campsite. You then follow the small road through the impressive Viamala, the initial hiking trail along the Rhine is not feasible on a mountain bike. Immediately after the gorge, you climb up again, pass Rongellen and then ride down directly into the center of Thusis.
