The best starting point for this tour is the Wiesen train station. Just a short distance above the station, you’ll take the first trail, a scenic high-altitude path that rides toward Schmitten. After an initial thrilling descent, you climb a gravel road and eventually circle around the village of Schmitten on the south side. The trail then rides the official mountain bike route for a few meters until, halfway to Alvaneu, you turn left onto a singletrack. This brings you to the village from below via a narrow path.
Next comes the actual ascent, which follows a gravel road up to the Aclas Davains alp and continues to a pass in the forest east of the cluster of houses. This is the highest point of the tour. It’s not uncommon to find some snow lingering in this shady spot until the end of April. However, this section is usually easy to navigate. By the time the descent trail transitions into the sunny southern slopes of Alvaneu, the snow has disappeared. With plenty of momentum, you head downhill, crossing the ascent route. Finally, you’ll roll leisurely along the valley floor to Filisur. From there, you can either ride the train back to Wiesen or tackle the well-known forest trail for the return journey. Those who opt for the more athletic route must pedal uphill for quite a distance after Filisur to reach the wide, flowing trail leading to the Wiesner Viaduct. This impressive structure serves as the crowning finale of a tour that is particularly well-suited when deeper winter still prevails in higher-altitude areas such as Davos or Lenzerheide.
Important note: The descent from Alp Aclas Davains passes through a wildlife sanctuary. The corresponding restrictions remain in effect for a relatively long time in the spring, whereas the area can be ridden unrestricted in the summer.
