Julier-Umrundung
Description
The challenging and high-alpine mountain bike tour around Piz Julier is best started in Sils in the Engadin or in Vedutta, just below the Julier Pass. Starting in Sils in the Engadine, you cycle along Lake Sils to Plaun da Lej and then tackle the ascent to the hamlet of Grevasalvas on a small road. At the end of the village, the 600-metre climb to Fuorcla Grevasalvas begins immediately. The ascent is challenging but quite entertaining, as you always have the picturesque panorama of the Engadin lakes behind you. Once you reach the crossing, you can see the descent ahead and the route to Fuorcla d'Agnel. High alpine, but mostly surprisingly smooth to ride, you follow the narrow path past Leg Grevasalvas and reach the Julier Pass road at La Vedutta after an overall technically demanding descent.
From here you start the ascent to Fuorcla d'Agnel, which is just under 800 meters higher and thus only just under 3000 meters above sea level. On this ascent, too, the bike is mostly on the hump, with only short sections ridden. Once you reach the top, you are greeted by a barren landscape in surreal-looking colors and a turquoise-blue mountain lake in the middle. You now follow a high alpine path through this stony desert, which is surprisingly easy to ride again and leads to the Jenatschhütte hut in somewhat gentler terrain. The trail then becomes more flowy and turns into a road further down. The descent ends at Alp Zembers da Suvretta and the generally rideable trail ascent to the Suvretta Pass begins. The first section is the steepest and requires strong legs, after which the trail flattens out and the ascent of around 500 vertical meters is foreseeable.
On reaching the pass, you pass Lej Suvretta and follow the flowing trail to Alp Suvretta. This is followed by another ascent on the high-level trail above the main Upper Engadin valley. After a descent, you cross the Julier Pass road, ride a few meters uphill on a small road and then take the last part of the Julier circumnavigation on the Via Engiadina hiking trail.
Tip: Split the challenging tour into two days and spend the night at the Chamanna Jenatsch.

Anyone who rides this tour either has the fitness of Nino Schurter - or an ultra-light bike. We had neither, but at least we had a sense of humor. 😄
The first part? A bad joke. It's best done with hiking boots.
Well, once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with the blue glacial lake. From the SAC Jenatsch it's worthwhile: rideable, beautiful scenery. Up again and a cool trail up and down to Silvaplana.
We only recommend this tour to hardcore bike hump types and female types😅
PS: Dear Ride Team: Have any of you really done this tour - and in one day? We look forward to your honest comment.
Best wishes from the three bikers - next time we'll plan better. Maybe 🤣
