Es-cha-Hütte

Es-cha-Hütte

The Es-cha hut impresses with its unique location with views of the Engadin and the glaciated Bernina massif. The route to and from the hut also boasts first-class single trails.

Description

From Samedan, the route initially leads along the railroad line via Bever to La Punt, where you turn onto the road to the Albula Pass. Follow this road and climb 570 meters in altitude until the path to the Es-cha hut branches off to the right. Well-trained mountain bikers ride all the way up to Fuorcla Gualdauna, but many push for a few meters. After the hill, it's time for everyone to ride again, as the trail now runs almost flatly along the height. Only a little below the Es-cha hut do you have to push again for a few meters because the trail is a little bumpy in some places. The descent from the hut is then world class. It leads along the ridge. Important: always keep to the right here and do not turn into the old hut path, as this is extremely technical. You then reach the alp, follow the little road for a short distance and then take the singletrail on the right. After crossing the stream, there is a short, steep ramp to conquer, followed immediately by the fantastic final section past the Guardaval ruins to Madulain. You return to Samedan along the officially signposted cycle paths.

My wife and I rode the tour on 15.08.2025 with our light e-bikes.
We think that skill level 3 is exactly right.

The ascent over the road to the Albula Pass is very easy to ride. The route then leads through alpine meadows. The path is a little trampled in places, but for the most part it's easy to ride, and it's perfectly fine to push the bike just once.

This is followed by a beautiful high-level trail, which becomes increasingly rocky and requires some pushing at the end. At the top of the hut, it is definitely worth stopping for a bite to eat: very friendly hospitality and delicious food.

The trail has only recently been maintained. Stream crossings and boggy sections have been made easily rideable with new wooden bridges. One or two gates for fencing off the pastures are somewhat impractical, but even that is easily manageable.

For us it was a very nice tour, which we will gladly repeat when we are in the region. Absolutely recommendable!

I rode a slightly shortened version of the tour today (start and finish in La Punt).

Only recommended if you like extremely technical high alpine terrain. And even then, not everything is rideable up and down (anyone who says otherwise is a chatterbox ;-)

I would give the tour one more point each for technique and fitness.

It was great!

Wonderful tour. The pass road is perfect for getting started.
As mentioned, the road before the hut is a little technical. But if you master the challenge and ride everything, you can pat yourself on the back.
The hut impresses with a wonderful menu, super-friendly service and a fantastic view. It's best to go during the week, when the number of hikers is limited.
I did the route as on the GPX track, i.e. the old "zig-zag" trail. That works too. It's a bit more technical than the new hiking trail, but if you've climbed everything, you'll manage it too ;-)
The rest was described by the previous speakers, very beautiful and varied tour in alpine terrain. But well doable, even if you may have to push a little. also suitable for people who have perhaps never been alpine before. But then I would go back the same way you came to the hut.

Very nice tour, despite the pass road ascent. Much of the ascent is rideable, most of the pushing sections come just before the hut. Beautiful descent: upper half alpine and challenging, the lower half easier and fun in the forest, at the end there are even sights to see: Guardaval castle ruins and Engadine houses in Madulain and La Punt.

Attention: the tour description rightly emphasizes that you must keep to the right on the descent and avoid the difficult old hut path. However, the track turns EXACTLY into this path at km 18.3! Therefore: ride the hairpin bend and stay on the marked hiking trail, after a few hundred meters you will come back to the track.

Note; in the high season it might be better not to ride the tour on a nice Sunday :). We had considerable hiker traffic (but also no possibility to do the tour on a weekday) and although the path is wide enough and nowhere exposed - so that you can avoid it without problems - the rush is a bit annoying for both sides. Incidentally, this applies to the Albulapass-Hütte section; there was hardly anyone on the descent to Madulain.

Rode the tour today. Now snow-free apart from a small section. However, it was so muddy that we had to carry our bikes uphill for long stretches - the mud blocked the bikes. In dry conditions, I would also say that you can ride the lower part fit. Further up, there are quite large stones in the way and I think that only very fit and technical top bikers ride here. But the descent is a dream and the view as soon as you leave the pass road is, as always, amazing. I would do it again in dry weather! Then also with a stop at the hut.

Dangers on 9.7.2021: There is still a large snowfield shortly after turning off the pass road. The rest of the path to Furcla has been repaired and widened. It is now more rideable - good fitness required. The trail is challenging (not for everyone) but in good condition. It is a good idea to take the old trail to the left as described. This has also been slightly improved. A great tour for bikers who love technical and challenging trails.

Beautiful tour, currently snow-free except for a few meters. The uphill is rideable except for a few heavily eroded sections, and the high trail is then quite easy. The descent has some loose scree in the upper part, but is fun to ride.

Checked 2019

Rode today 15.10.2018, but coming from Preda via the Albula Pass. Nice tour with a crisp descent. 95% singletrack and the 5% doubletrack are just what I need to relax for a moment :-D
Regarding the comment "Well-trained mountain bikers ride all the way up to Fuorcla Gualdauna,..." > I'd like to see who, apart from Sauser and Neff, can push it up with about 800m in their legs - no continuous path, rather steep and the air is a bit thin...
but only about 150m, so it's only half as bad.
The way back to Samedan can be strenuous, as there is often a nasty headwind blowing down the valley in the afternoon :-o
