Igl Compass

Igl Compass mit Val Zuvretta

The Igl Compass is one of the easy 3,000-metre peaks in Graubünden and can generally also be tackled by mountain bike. The route shines in particular with the world-class descent through Val Zavretta down to Preda.

Description

The starting point for the ascent of the Igl Compass is the village of Preda. Then take the pass road, which is not particularly busy, up to the Albula Pass. A bus service (Bus Alpin) is also available as a shuttle on this section. The toughest part of the route is after the Albula Pass with the walk up to Fuorcla Zavretta. The bike has to be carried on this section, and the terrain is very alpine in the upper section. From the Fuorcla up to the summit, it is an additional 130 meters in altitude. The ascent to the summit is worth it just for the wonderful panorama from the Ortler to the Bernina massif. The descent leads to Fuorcla via the ascent route and is very alpine and very demanding on this section, but largely rideable for good bikers. At Fuorcla, head left down into Val Zavretta, where the trail becomes smoother and more fun as the distance increases. The trail is a highlight in the middle of a wild alpine landscape. After Alp Zavretta and the descent into the wooded terrain, the character of the descent changes. The trail rides as a fun super trail directly to the starting point in Preda. Conclusion: A challenging ascent with a bombastic descent - a little-known gem in Graubünden.

05.07.2025 I rode the tour and can also confirm the comments written below in 2025.
- A tough ascent from the top of the Albula Pass to Fuorcla Zavretta - the subsequent ascent to the summit is rather easy.
- Superb descent with riding technique level 4 - simply WOW!!!
- On the descent from Fuorcla Zavretta in the slate gravel and at the beginning of the last third at the alpine meadows, pay close attention to the route!
Only undertake the tour in good visibility or good weather conditions. It would be a shame to miss out on the fantastic panoramic view and orientation on the first downhill section would really be left to luck.
A great tour for all those who love unspoilt mountain trails!

17.07.2023 ridden.
The stretcher passage is really tough. But if I can do it as a small woman, the big boys can do it too.
The summit is great. You can't miss this view. From the summit to the fuorcla, everything is rideable. Tricky but rideable. From then on (as already described) it is simply a world-class descent. Even with challenges, it's just so much fun. The scenery is simply unique. I also met the trail manager from the municipality on the trail...super nice and he does his job perfectly. The sheep herder further down was also in a great mood. So full good vibes up there!

02.07.2022 / The tour is really great. Provided you haven't burned off all your energy on the ascent. The descent requires at least the same amount of energy again.
It's worth taking it a little easier and more carefully on the ascent. You will be rewarded with really many marmot encounters (2-10m distance). It's also worth climbing early in the morning, as the sun shines permanently on the ascent slope in good weather.
For technicians, the descent is a dream, provided you still have some energy left. No high-speed bolts, but rather tricky alpine terrain on a wide variety of surfaces in steep terrain. Falling is not an option. Incidentally, the descent is also not recommended in fog, otherwise orientation becomes a matter of luck in the section after Fuorcla Zavretta.
All in all, a super beautiful but also very challenging tour.
