Bimbam-Trail (Stelvio)

Goldsee-Trail (Stelvio)

The Bimbam Trail is a worthwhile alternative route to the Goldsee Trail, which attracts a lot of hikers in the high season. This option is even more attractive because the chairlift to the Furkelhütte is integrated and the tour therefore has even more downhill single trails.

Description

The Stilfserjoch is the starting point of the Bimbam tour, which begins with the steep ascent to the Garibaldi hut. Just behind it, you head onto the Goldsee trail. Biking is prohibited here from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but our route only leads along the Goldsee Trail in the first section. At the mountain ridge above the Goldsee lake, the trail to the right leads into a fantastic descent past the upper and lower Tartscher Alm pastures to the village of Trafoi. While hikers march in columns on the Goldsee Trail in high season, you will hardly meet anyone on this route. In Trafoi, take the chairlift to the Furkelhütte hut and rejoin the original route of the Goldsee tour. This leads up and down past the Stilfser Alm to the Lichtenbergscharte. There is a short section on a gravel road until the next trail begins at the left-hand serpentine. This trail marks the start of the long descent to Prad, which is the sensational conclusion to this tour. Depending on where you start the tour, you head towards Spondinig in Prad and follow the cycle path to Glurns, where you board the Postbus for those who have chosen the Münstertal as their starting point and have ridden up to the Stelvio via the Umbrail Pass in the morning.

I rode the tour on July 11, 2025. In my opinion, the section up to the Goldsee is an absolute dream trail. However, the downhill to Trafoi was too steep and too rough for my liking. Even though I was able to ride almost everything, I didn't have much fun. At least the trail got "less bad" the longer it went on :-)
The trail to the Stilfseralm is another highlight and the whole descent to Prad is also very worthwhile.
As we had to return to Müstair, we then climbed via Lichtenbergscharte and Tschageinalphütte to Rifair Scharte. However, the subsequent downhill was a poor reward for the exertions. Even though it was almost completely rideable, it was difficult to find in places and steep throughout, especially before the alp.
I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill I'm always the last one by a long way.

I think the Bimbam Trail is great—it’s rugged and alpine, definitely not a flow trail. It’s smoother down in the woods, which is good for relaxing :-)

We rode the tour today (Aug. 5, 2025) - as far as we could. Attention: after a forest fire in April 2025 in the eastern flank of the Grossmontoni, all hiking trails etc. are closed there until further notice! After the turn-off from the alpine road at about 1735m above sea level, this is currently signposted as such (only about 50m after the turn-off...). Even when we wanted to cross on a trail further down ("Gaschlin") we got burned. So we just continued to Stilfs and the main road - it was still great and extensive.

Open to traffic again (like all trails through the wildfire zone, according to a local farmer). The "Closed" sign is still there (on the ground); right at the start, you have to go through a fallen tree, and after that, everything has been cleared but not mowed (thistles and stinging nettles).

I agree with Thomas Maier, a hard 3... But great. Was there on 24.7., combined with the Chavalatsch (see comment on the Goldseetrail)

Great tour. The first few hundred Elevation loss of the BimBam trail are still a bit rough, but after that it gets much better. Make sure you allow enough time, especially if you want to pick mushrooms along the way. Superb nature & panorama!

I rode the tour today and can only underline the previous comments: the tour is really sensational: panorama, flowing trails and varied. Be sure to plan enough time and enjoy the breathtaking panorama (Ortler, Vinschgau, etc.) in between.
I got on the post bus in Mustair Posta (7:13, important: make a reservation!) to Stilfserjoch. Coffee and "Gipfeli" at the Furkelhütte (approx. 9:30 there).
Addition to the comment from Sept. 23: yes, the track is no longer correct in two places. Before Prad, follow the official bike path no. 112 for a short time and then make sure you get back on the track all the way down. From Glurns, a post bus rides back to Mustair with enough bike capacity. However, I decided not to take it and cycled back to Mustair myself along the cycle path, which is wide but follows the river nicely. I still had enough energy for a few meters of ascent (after the post bus & chairlift). At first I thought I wouldn't need the whole day, but I didn't get back to Mustair until 3pm, including a short sightseeing tour in Glurns and, as mentioned, lots of stops for the panorama.

Rode on 5.9.2023. Really great tour. Panorama is awesome.

Track is partly no longer correct. Follow the hiking trail before Trafoi, the path according to the track leads into a private path. No passage possible.

Before Prad follow the signposted bike path. Very flowy. The official bike path rides back onto the RIDE tour, then follow this track again. On the official bike path, the last 200 m are covered on a road.

Shuttle booked via Südtirolbike. Very easy to do via the website.

By post bus 0720 h from Santa Maria to the Stilfserjoch. Breakfast at the Tibet hut. Departure before 0900 h due to the driving ban. Super trails to Trafoi. A visit to the Stelvio National Park House is recommended. After the Furkelhütte, the trails of the Lichtenbergscharte are added. Brilliant! The fallen trees are gone - free ride. Shortly before Prad, don't follow the track, but the signposted bike route. Great again. From Prad on the cycle path along the edge of the forest to Glurns. Postbus to Santa Maria.

Tour done today. From the lower Tarscher Alm to Trafoi the trail (hiking trail 16) is closed due to logging - bypass via the Stelvio pass road.
The up and down after the Furkelhütte to the Lichtenbergscharte is an uphill trail over a longer distance and takes time. Fallen trees at km 23 are still there. I would rate the riding technique at 4 out of 6. All in all a great tour in a great setting, S2-safe riding style required

Attention: the chairlift in Trafoi not only stops for lunch but also closes at 17:00! I did the tour yesterday and didn't meet anyone - neither hikers nor bikers - except of course in Trafoi. Top tour. It took me around 45 minutes from the Stelvio parking lot to the Trafoi chairlift. Bikes are only prohibited after the ascent to the Garibaldi hut. Fallen trees at kilometer 23 still there, some good bypasses, some not and annoying.

Attention chairlift in Trafoi has a lunch break from 12.00 to 13.30.

Beautiful tour. Technical climbs from the Stilfseralm. From km 23 several fallen trees.
