Tabarettascharte

Tabarettascharte

The Tabarettascharte right at the foot of the Ortler offers an overwhelming descent to Trafoi and a stretcher ascent that is hard to beat in terms of scenery.

Description

The tour to the Tabarettascharte begins in Sulden, a starting point that can be easily reached with the bike shuttle, as the local bus from Prad to Sulden does not transport bikes. Once in Sulden, the chairlift takes you to the Langenstein hut. After a short descent on a gravel road, you turn off onto the trail to the Tabaretta hut. Initially, the trail is still rideable, but soon the bike has to be pushed, especially on the challenging section to the Tabarettascharte. Although this part seems impassable from below, the trail is easily manageable on foot. The surrounding scenery with the Ortler and the rocky landscape is breathtaking. It is advisable to tackle this section in the morning, as many mountaineers descend from the Ortler in the afternoon and the narrow, steep path can then be very busy.

Finally, you reach the Tabarettascharte and follow the mountain ridge, which is secured with holding ropes over long stretches and is easy to do for experienced mountaineers with a bike in hand. The most challenging part of the route offers breathtaking views.

The long singletrail descent to Trafoi begins below the Payerhütte hut and is initially slippery but easy to ride (level S3) through the bumpy terrain. The impressive glacier world of the Ortler remains in the background during the entire descent. Below the Edelweisshütte, the trail becomes more flowy (S2) and leads through the mountain pine area. At the tree line, the trail becomes particularly flowy, and good serpentine technique is required. You wind your way through the forest to the lowest crossroads near Trafoi. A particular highlight at the end of the tour is the grotto on the banks of the stream with its crystal-clear water.

The second part of the tour begins with the chairlift ride up to Furkelhütte, the return trip to Prad. You climb a little after the Furkelhütte hut, initially on gravel, then a little steeper on a trail. Finally, a trail leads down to the Stilfseralm, where you then ride slightly uphill again on a trail to the turn-off to the Lichtenbergscharte. The descent to Prad consists of great and flowing single trails, which are repeatedly interrupted by gravel road sections. The final trail ends right on the outskirts of Prad.

Note: There is a descent from the Furkelhütte directly down to Gamagoi. However, this is extremely challenging and includes some pushing sections.
