Madritschjoch – Hintere Schöntaufspitze

Hintere Schöntaufspitze (Madritschjoch)

The Hintere Schöntaufspitze (3325 meters above sea level) near the Madritschjoch is a rewarding 3000-meter peak that offers a clever shuttle combination for an enduro circuit of around 18 kilometers and 2500 Elevation loss.

Description

Start at Goldrain train station. From here, take the Val Venosta train through the apple orchards to Prad am Stilfser Joch. From Prad am Stilfser Joch, you can either take a local shuttle service or the bus to Sulden. Once you arrive in Sulden, you are already at an altitude of almost 1900 meters above sea level. There is a short transfer route to the impressive Sulden cable car, which transports bikers up to 2581 meters above sea level. From this point, the pedals are really put to work for the first time. Immediately on a steep cart track, at the end on a narrow trail, you reach the famous Madritschjoch. From the Madritschjoch, it's just under 200 meters up to the Hintere Schöntaufspitze, where you have to carry your bike. Once at the top, the view here is a paradise. Gently nestled between the Martellental and Suldental valleys, this 3000-metre peak offers majestic views.

The trail descent is just as majestic as the summit experience and the panorama. The upper section varies greatly in difficulty from S2 to S3 until you reach the Madritschjoch. From Madritschjoch towards Martelltal, the trail is initially at S3 level, later at S2, very easy to ride and you can put your biking skills to good use. A particularly beautiful highlight of the tour is just before the Zufallhütte hut, where the trail crosses meadows and the embedded valley floor. The route continues out of the valley through the entire Martell Valley, alternating from S2 to S3 in places, before taking another uphill left in Gand and pedaling up to the Steinwandhof farm. From this farm comes the last trail highlight. At difficulty levels S2 to S3 and then S1, it's all downhill to Morter and on to Goldrain. With a whopping 18 kilometers of trails and over 2500 Elevation loss, this is one of the longest and most impressive tours in the Vinschgau Valley.

The trail from the Madritschjoch down to the reservoir is an absolute must-do! From technical single sections to the best trail banging to alpine flow, the trail offers everything you need!

In our opinion, the trail from the reservoir in the direction of Gand can be safely omitted. The many counter-climbs, which usually have to be pushed, spoil the euphoria of the first part of the tour. It's better to roll straight down the road. Saves time and energy...

In our opinion, you should do the Schöntaufspitze from the Joch without a bike. We left the bikes after the halfway point. Sure, some sections are easy to ride, but others are really tough. We would rather increase the rating to S4, especially if you compare the rating from the tour description. The S3 passages from the Joch down to the Zufallhütte were all good to ride, but if you compare the terrain with the passages on the Schöntaufspitze, it's another level. At times, you feel more like you're on an alpine climb than a trail. Loose scree, exposed terrain, extremely tight hairpin bends, high steps, rugged rocky passages...those who ride it really have it in them...but there always has to be room for improvement...;-)

The 200m from Gand to the Steinwandhof is well worth it again...the subsequent trail down into the valley is steep and technical, but great to ride...The final down to Goldrain is easy flow, which is the perfect way to end the day.

All in all a mega tour!!!

If you ride to the left below the Madritschjoch, you can ride almost all the way up to the Schöntaufspitze and save yourself the arduous ascent over the Madritschjoch. An Austrian who set off from Sulden 15 minutes before us was at the top of the Schöntaufspitze at the same time as we were on the Madritschjoch. Incidentally, the Austrian was on an e-bike. Just like us.
