Kreuzjöchl

The Kreuzjöchl tour is one of the little-known highlights of the Vinschgau Valley, especially because of the fun descent into the Martelltal Valley.

Description

From Laces you ride along the Venosta Valley cycle path to Covelano. This is where the 1300-metre ascent begins. The route follows a small road until just above the Mitterhof farm, after which a forest path turns off to the right. Along this, you reach the altitude mark of 1900 meters above sea level and then take the single trail with the number 17 up to the Kreuzjöchl. The bike has to be pushed in sections on these last 150 meters of altitude. The descent leads along the 1er trail, which is steep but easy to ride. At a small road, follow the 19er route to the Steinwandhof and then the 28er trail. Halfway to the valley floor, take the trail numbered 28a that branches off to the right and leads to the Plimabach stream. Follow this out of the valley to finally reach the Montani ruins via the Neuwaal. The winding single trail to the apple orchards is the perfect finish.

Alternatives: Descent from Kreuzjöchl on the 17er trail to Holzbrugg near Göflan

Shuttles: Taxi shuttle to Haslhof (Holy Hansen shuttle)

I did this hike on August 9, 2026, crossing the Göflaner Scharte. A very beautiful and rewarding hike with a fantastic descent; the trails are in excellent condition! Only the traverse on the 28a was overgrown in places, but that didn’t bother me further since there were no more technical difficulties. Highly recommended for anyone who has the technical skills and loves natural mountain trails!

The upper part of the trail is very eroded and poorly maintained, so in my opinion, it’s no longer worth the effort to ride up there and push your bike! It’s better to take the Holy Hanson, starting from Haslhof, but you can also approach it from Schartl.

I think 28a is the one that is no longer passable. It was also quite overgrown before.

We rode the tour yesterday. After about 900m uphill, you come to the (last) Hasel inn. Be sure to eat a Kaiserschmarn there. But one for two is enough. Otherwise you will - like me - regret it on the remaining 550m.
The vertical meters are - as described - given back almost vertically. The lower part of the first descent is enormously overgrown. We couldn't ride the lowest part at all. Too many stinging nettles, thistles and completely overgrown. But the way out at the bottom, along the river, was very cool again.
All in all, not the most beautiful tour in this area for me. Steep up, steep down. But it's definitely worth doing.

Great tour off the beaten track. On the ascent, the forest path further up is currently impassable due to fallen trees. However, it is possible to push around the section on a hiking trail.

The descents are nice and steep with lots of hairpin bends.

Top tour!
