Graue Wand

Graue Wand (Schnalstal)

The mountain ridges from Grawand (Graue Wand) to Punta della Vedretta are unglaciated mountain bike 3000m peaks with indescribable trail descents in the border area between Italy and Austria in the rear Schnalstal Valley.

Description

The tour starts in Unser Frau (Madonna) in the Schnalstal Valley and winds its way along the pass road from the Vernagt reservoir to the Grawandbahn valley station. Here you can buy a ticket and enjoy the breathtaking cable car ride to over 3,200 meters above sea level in just a few minutes. At the Hotel Grawand, head towards the Graue Wand, where the trail paradise begins. From the saddle to the Graue Wand, the first bike 3000-metre peak, it's just a few turns of the cranks and you're at 3202 meters above sea level. The panoramic view is fabulous. The trail has a difficulty rating of S1 to S2 and rides from the Graue Wand to the glacier lake. From here, it's time to take off your protectors and saddle up to the next 3000-meter peak. This involves carrying and pushing about 400 meters in altitude to Im hinteren Eis/ Punta della Vedretta. At the summit you have a tremendous view of the Hintereisferner and the Weißkugel (3739 meters above sea level). The trail from the summit to the Rifugio Bella Vista is full of enduro genes. With a difficulty of S2 to S3, it can be ridden with a few hairpin bends. A few meters before the Rifugio, the bike has to be pushed in sections. A stop at Rifugio Bella Vista is a must, as the food here is legendary, especially the Kaiserschmarrn pancakes. From the hut, take the 3-way trail back to Kurzras at the bottom of the Schnalstal Valley. This seems to be perfectly designed for bikers, with a difficulty rating from S1 to S3 and everything an ambitious biker's heart desires. You briefly cut back onto the main road and then take the 7a trail back to the high ropes course. From there, the route continues at S1 to S2 level around the lake on trail 8a to the dam wall. Here, turn sharply back to the other shore and take the 15a trail back to the starting point. Once you reach the bottom, you have collected some Elevation loss, whereby the gondola lift shuttle with the Grawandbahn has played its part in being able to tackle two 3000 m peaks in one day without stress.

Tour ridden on 14.08.22. The panorama is incredibly beautiful, the part to the summit behind the ice was mostly unrideable for us, even downhill, and we left the bike halfway up. The rest of the trails are great and challenging.

Dear Ride Team,
Thank you very much for the tour tip! Could you please check the track again? I think the summits are missing.
