Möltner Joch

Möltener Joch

The day tour in the Adige Valley between Bolzano and Merano to the Möltner Joch with the trail descent via Schlaneid is a varied all-mountain tour with stunning panoramic views.

Description

The first time you pedal is in the village of Terlan. From here, the route initially climbs steadily uphill along the Möltnerstrasse on asphalt, before continuing relatively steeply up the old pass road before the galleries, which is heavily overgrown but easily passable. You then rejoin the Möltnerstrasse and stay on it. The panoramic views get better and better and eventually you reach the hamlet of Verschneid. The idyllic route continues through larch forests and along biotopes before taking a small trail uphill to Schermoos. Now you cross the Lanzenweg and switch from asphalt to gravel again, with the last few meters to the summit cross being relatively steep. At the cross, you have fantastic panoramic views to the south, as well as into the Venosta Valley, the Texel Group and the Ötztal Alps.

The trail descent is very relaxed at the start. A flow trail takes you past the Kircheben reservoir until you reach Mölten. At Mölten, you take a mule track that rides up to the Vilpian-Mölten cable car mountain station. Up to this point, the downhill was relatively easy and peppered with only small climbs. This changes abruptly from the cable car station onwards. Intermediate sections with S1 are not uncommon here, but they are followed by massive S3 sections with hairpin bends, steep steps and a few drops. In this manner, you slowly circle your way down, but have very good viewpoints on the vertical rock face into the Adige Valley. For a short time, you will come to a karn path, which you only ride on for a few meters. You then rejoin the old Mulitiera trail, but do not leave it. At the junction, ride straight ahead. The variant on the left would be an S4 to S5 singletrail - therefore only recommended for absolute experts. You then cross the trail, which is somewhat displaced in some places due to a rockfall, but these can be mastered without any problems. Rolling out to Vilpian and the cycle path to Terlain is an idyllic final act of the tour.

I did the tour today.

First it's a somewhat boring (asphalt) ascent, then there's a fantastic panorama before the descent.

The difficulty increases from very easy to really tough - it has it all.

The rockfall is easy to do, and there are only a few meters in altitude.

In my opinion, some of the key sections are already heading towards S4, but you can also simply push them briefly.

Top tour - many thanks for that!

Tour done today. Very nice trail. Lower part not passable due to falling rocks, the bike has to be carried over a stone field several times. Next time we will take the alternative chestnut trail in the lower section.
