Jenesien (Bozen)

The village of Jenesien high above Bolzano at the entrance to the Sarntal Valley is accessible by cable car - the best starting point for enduro mountain bikers. This combines the three classic downhill routes into a wonderful day tour with three cable car rides.

Description

The first descent from Jenesien back to Bolzano leads steeply down via the farms to the north into the gorge at the entrance to the Sarntal valley. To do this, follow the singletrail above the road that rides to Afing. At Unterkofler, you cross the road and then head down to the Talfer river, which has carved a narrow entrance into the Sarntal valley. The route then follows the river on small roads back to the valley station of the Jenesien cable car.
Descent number two is next. From the top station of the cable car, you climb up to the village center of Jenesien and then follow the single trail over to Gasthof Locher. In a mixture of gravel roads and trails along the mountain ridge, you later reach the north side of the Altenberg, where the singletrail descent to Bolzano starts. This leads through the steep southern flank, you pass the vineyards and return to Bolzano at the district of Gries. You now roll back to the Jenesien cable car on the cycle paths to tackle the third descent.
The first section of the third and final descent to Noaner Weiher is identical to the second. Here, however, you branch off to the right and head down almost continuously on single trails past Greifenstein Castle to the cactus settlement on the valley floor northwest of Bolzano. Once again, you roll along side roads and cycle paths back to the Jenesien cable car.

The trails are all great fun! I was shocked when I heard that the cable car had been discontinued ;((
It looks like it will be a while before the new one is finally built. Fortunately, there are plenty of other cable cars in the area that offer countless enduro adventures. The area around Bolzano has been one of my favorite biking areas for two decades now!

Attention: The Jenesien cable car has been closed indefinitely since November 2020!
