Karerpass

Karersee

The route from Welschnofen to the Niger Pass and the Karer Pass is one of the great bike classics in the face of the Rosengarten rock massif. The tour does not require any extraordinary trail skills, but offers great riding fun against a magnificent backdrop.

Description

The Niger Pass is located directly above Welschnofen, the starting point of the tour to the Karer Pass. For the ascent, you first circle the Taltbühel and then head through the northern side of the upper Tiersertal valley, primarily on gravel roads, up to the Niger Pass. The Niger Pass is not far from the mountain station of the gondola lift that starts in Welschnofen - so you could have bought the ascent with the lift. However, the ascent is not quite finished here: after the Niger Pass, the long ascent up to the Karer Pass follows, primarily on wonderfully constructed and easy single trails. The culmination point is finally reached at the Karerpass. A little later, you reach Lake Carezza on a gravel road and pass the Grand Hotel on the way down. Empress Sissi once spent a long vacation here in 1897, which is why monuments have been erected to her and paths named after her. However, we are less interested in this cult of personality than in the view of the lovely Karersee lake and the view of the upcoming singletrail descent. This leads in a racy manner down to the Hotel Adler in the large serpentine bend of the main road. A short ascent is required before jetting off on the next wonderful trail high above the Karerpass road right into the center of Welschnofen.
