After the big favorite Julien Absalon had to cancel at short notice due to the imminent premature birth of his first child, it was exciting to see whether the Swiss would use this opportunity to win. The unfortunate weather conditions obviously suited the Swiss, as it quickly became clear that the foreign competitors would have no chance in these conditions. The two cyclo-cross specialists Lukas Flückiger and Marcel Wildhaber quickly pulled away and when Flückiger also left his last companion behind on the fourth of eight laps, it looked like a clear victory for Flückiger. On the second last lap, Flückiger crashed in a water hole and subsequently had major problems with the cold. Local hero Martin Fanger, who was the only one able to maintain contact with the two leading riders to some extent, took this opportunity to attack and catch up with the leader. A dramatic finale ensued on the last lap, with Fanger pulling out a ten-second lead over the two cyclo-cross specialists by the time he reached the mountain finish. On the descent to the finish, Flückiger crashed again and Willdhaber was able to catch up to Fanger with his last ounce of strength in the final meters, but was unable to sprint past him.

In the women's race, Cécile Ravanel and Marielle Saner-Guinchard also fought a thrilling duel that was only decided in Ravanel's favor on the last lap. Downhill specialist Saner was unable to catch up with Ravanel due to braking problems on the final descent, with Swiss champion Katrin Leumann finishing third.
