Today's mid-drive motors usually run in combination with derailleur gears. These systems consisting of chainring, chain and derailleur are already susceptible to wear without E-Power; with a mid-motor, it is not uncommon for the chains to wear out after just a few hundred kilometers and require replacement. If this replacement is not carried out, the very common mid-motor derailleur system acknowledges this negligence with poor power transmission and low shifting precision.

The new Pinion e-bike system, which integrates the gearshift into the motor housing, makes a promise that could turn today's e-bike systems on their head: the system is virtually wear-free, with an oil change due after around 10,000 kilometers. The well-known Pinion gearboxes have proven their durability and low wear over the long term. And yet the Pinion drive is powerful: on average, 85 Nm should be available, but up to 160 Nm can reach the rear wheel in low gears.

The entire system is housed in a closed and fully sealed casing that prevents the ingress of dust, mud and water, which also makes cleaning and maintenance of the entire bike much easier - especially if it is equipped with a belt drive that does not need to be greased or lubricated. The gear system has up to twelve gears on board with a gear range of 600%. 

Shifting is done electrically and Pinion promises that it is lightning fast, even under high loads. The Pinion E-Drive system offers four support levels: ECO is designed for maximum range, while FLY fully utilizes the enormous power of the system at all times. The FLOW and FLEX levels, on the other hand, are adaptive riding modes that are designed to be progressive and adapt the level of assistance perfectly to every riding situation and the respective terrain. A sensitive start-up aid and an extra boost at the touch of a button complete the package. All modes can be individually adjusted to your own preferences in the FIT EBike Control app. Speaking of Fit: Biketec GmbH, a sister company of Swiss e-bike specialist Flyer, has its fingers in the pie here, with the displays, remote and software coming from this company.

Pinion currently has nine launch partners on board: Bulls, Flyer, i:sy, Kettler, Pegasus, Rotwild, Simplon, Tour Terrain and Zemo are the first bicycle manufacturers to market the innovation. Around one hundred manufacturers are already on board for the non-motorized Pionion transmission.
