As with its predecessor, the new version has eight different geometry setups. These are made possible with flip chips (levels 1 to 4) and the angle-adjustable Newmen headset. To get a good impression of the different riding characteristics, the bike was tested in "long" level 1 and in the standard version level 2.

According to Vincent Droux - the man behind Bold Cycles - the new model differs from the first model as follows:

"The slightly adapted kinematics are a tad firmer and more lively. The bikes differ in particular in the rear triangle (shorter rocker and seat stay) and in the geometry with a more moderate steering angle (adjustable from 64.1 to 66.9 degrees) and a steeper seat angle. The bottom bracket height can also be higher thanks to the shorter stroke in the respective levels, up to a maximum of 34 millimetres at level 1 (comparison Unplugged Volume 1: 27.5 millimetres)."

.

Equipment

Bold does not have any fixed equipment. There is a selection of all add-on parts, which are then individually configured to create a complete bike. The test bike is equipped with the latest suspension elements from DT Swiss. The Sram Eagle GX groupset gets the gears moving and its Guide Ultimate throttles the speed, which is fast thanks to the lightweight 29-inch carbon wheels from DT Swiss.

Processing & details

As you would expect from Bold, the workmanship is of the highest standard. The interplay of matt and glossy black colors is skillfully implemented and gives the bike a sporty yet elegant appearance.

On the flat

Basically, the Volume 2 rides in a similar way to its big brother, the Volume 1. The riding position is relaxed and you pedal efficiently. The steering behavior in the standard setup (level 2) is a lot livelier than in the long version, which is very similar to the first model. You immediately feel comfortable on the bike and have very good control over it.

Up the mountain

As usual, Bold's latest creation offers a high level of traction and climbs nimbly up even very exposed trails. On very steep ramps, where you ride at minimum speed, the bike remains calm and balanced. Due to its length, the front wheel doesn't rise a bit.

Downhill

The long geometry is suitable for a race-oriented riding style and requires a little more physical effort to steer the bike through tight corners. On the other hand, it pulls through berms like on rails. However, the low bottom bracket means that you're likely to sit up or hit the pedals. In the standard setup, the Unplugged is a lot easier to handle without compromising its downhill characteristics. Bold manages the balancing act between smoothness and playfulness perfectly. The bike literally invites you to play with the terrain and to catch "airtime" wherever possible.

Conclusion

The first Unplugged is clearly an enduro rocket with racing genes that you can ride a little too fast. The Volume 2 - also known as the Mini Unplugged by insiders - is a balanced trail bike with enduro genes.

Recommendation

There is probably never a perfect all-rounder, but the Bold Unplugged Volume 2 comes pretty close. The bike is a very good all-rounder for trail riders who love to ride downhill.
