EKZ-Cup: Rohrbach siegt nach Aufholjagd
Despite being the favorite, Nicola Rohrbach starts far back as a late-registered rider. "Luckily, there was some tactics at the front. That gave me the opportunity to catch up with the front runners," explains the World Cup rider. Meanwhile, Thomas Kalberer found shelter in the five-man leading group that soon formed. This also includes EKZ Cup leader Konny Looser, Pascal Meyer and last year's winner Jukka Vastaranta from Finland.
Almost every second, the leading riders attempt to break away, but are unsuccessful due to the horrendous pace. Then came a decisive race situation. "In a slippery corner, we rode up to a Master rider who had started in front of us. Unfortunately, we crashed while overtaking," says an annoyed Looser, describing the situation. Rohrbach and Kalberer, on the other hand, were unaware of Looser's crash. "Suddenly, we saw the hole behind us," says Rohrbach, who then gave his remaining opponent a good run for his money. "I kept increasing the pace to see if Kalberer could keep up. At some point, the hole was open," says Rohrbach happily, snatching victory ahead of Thomas Kalberer and Konny Looser.
Looser and Kalberer are now tied in the overall standings. Thanks to the better result in Wetzikon, however, Kalberer is the new leader in the rankings. In third place overall is Pascal Meyer, who finished fifth in the race. The women's race is sparsely populated with only six riders. Nevertheless, Sonja Guerrini puts in a strong race and wins the race ahead of Sonja Kallio from Finland, who lives in Switzerland, and Joana Schönthal. The latter takes the lead in the overall standings.
Thanks to unrestricted sunshine, many cycling enthusiasts make the pilgrimage to the Meierwiesen in Wetzikon, which is not only noticeable in the sales of the ice cream stand. The beautiful conditions are also reflected in the number of participants. Around 500 participants were inspired to take part in the various categories. "Many of the 150 late registrations were probably due to the beautiful weather," says OC boss Ernst Jucker happily, expressing a big thank you to the volunteers from RV Wetzikon. The six-minute EKZ Cup magazines will be broadcast on Sport Szene Fernsehen SSF at 8.00 pm and 9.05 pm on the Thursday after the races and on Tele Züri at 12.30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. In addition, further exciting video and photo reports will be available on the social media channels from Monday.www.ekz-cup.ch
