The Upper Black Forest is a popular region for mountain bikers. By Black Forest standards, it has the highest elevation gain and a particularly dense network of trails. The region is particularly well-known for its numerous very flowing single trails, on which even less experienced mountain bikers can experience that real trail feeling. Although the Feldberg, the highest peak in the Black Forest (1493 meters above sea level), is not considered a trail hotspot, the regions immediately surrounding it are particularly attractive. These include Todtnau with its legendary bike park and the even more legendary Hasenhorn chairlift. Or the region around Schluchsee and the town of Neustadt, where a strong mountain bike scene has developed. And Freiburg im Breisgau, probably the best-known mountain bike city in Germany, is located right at the foot of the Upper Black Forest. When it comes to trails, the region south of Freiburg is worth mentioning, with the Belchen and the Blauen featuring particularly long single trails.

The Upper Black Forest region depicted by Ride is somewhat more extensive than that of the official tourism organization and in fact covers the entire southern Black Forest as far as the Rhine on the Swiss border. To the north, the Upper Black Forest extends to the regions of Schonach and St. Georgen.

Arrival by public transport

Public transport in the Upper Black Forest is provided by the Höllentalbahn from Freiburg via Hinterzarten to Donaueschingen and the Schwarzwaldbahn from Offenburg to Singen. Bicycle transportation is easily possible. Freiburg has excellent public transport links thanks to the ICE train connection.

Arrival by car

The Upper Black Forest is well developed for private transport, with well-developed country roads leading to almost all villages. Freiburg is located on the A5 highway between Basel and Karlsruhe. The largest town on the eastern side is Villingen-Schwenningen, from where there is a fast connection to Freiburg via Hinterzarten on the Bundesstrasse 31.
