Kandel – Präsident-Thoma-Weg

Kandel (Schwarzwald)

The Kandel is a top panoramic mountain in the Freiburg region. But it is also the starting point for one of the longest singletrail descents. This rides along ten kilometers of single trail on the President-Thoma-Weg down to Suggental. Rating: outstanding!

Description

The route starts in Waldkirch at the entrance to the Elz Valley. The long ascent to the top of the Kandel Pass awaits. You could tackle this on the road, but there is a lot of recreational traffic on the road. With a mountain bike, it is better to start by rolling to Siensbach and then climb up to the pass summit on the moderately ascending gravel road (Siensbacher Kandelstrasse). 950 meters in altitude have to be mastered. If you wish, you can stop for refreshments at the inn or ride directly up to the viewing platform at the summit (1240 meters above sea level). The view up here is stunning and extends over the Breisgau and Etztal valleys to the Feldberg, the Vosges mountains and, on a clear day, even as far as the Alps. The Kandel summit is the starting point for the long descent on the President Thoma Trail (named after Emil Thoma, President of the Black Forest Association from 1905 to 1920). The trail offers pretty much everything you could wish for as a mountain biker: flowing passages, serpentines, technical sections, roots, soft forest floor, rock gardens, bends. Everything is included on the ten-kilometer descent. But there are also one or two pedestrians - a considerate riding style is particularly important here.

Finally, you reach the village of Suggental. If you've had enough, roll along the Elz upstream back to Waldkirch. The additional detour to Kastelburg Castle is more attractive. To do this, you climb up the opposite side of the valley on gravel roads until just below the Hohe Tanne summit and later roll down to the castle ruins on a wide, easy single trail. The last few meters add a lot of excitement to the tour with the many hairpin bends. Conclusion on return: the route is one of the most attractive singletrail routes in the Freiburg region. Belongs on the bucket list!

We rode the tour yesterday. The climb is long and you have to pull yourself together and push yourself up the last 100 meters. It's worth it: the trails are beautiful and flowy. We also met most of the hikers on this tour, most of whom we let pass us in a friendly manner. But you can tell that they are not yet used to bikers.
We spared ourselves the second ascent.
The tour is definitely worthwhile!

Rode yesterday. All in all, a very nice tour. Outstanding is an overstatement. You have to earn the ascent to the Kandel. The last 100m are up to 19% gradient😝
The descent is super flowy for the most part. There are also sections with rocks, roots and obstacles to spice up the trail. The trail to Hoher Tannen is overgrown - no getting through. But the descent from the castle is a hairpin bend festival. A worthwhile rating!

Rode today, absolute top tour!

The path to the Hohe Tanne summit is very overgrown. You can fight your way through or take a forest path a few meters further up.

The trails really have it all. Thanks for the tour!

It is generally advisable not to do the tour at the weekend to avoid conflicts with hikers.
