Säckinger Trail-Tour

Säckinger Trail Tour

There are some excellent single trails near Bad Säckingen and in the Wehratal valley behind it. The tour goes around the Wehratal to a certain extent and includes, for example, the excellent Plotzenweg trail.

Description

At the start of the tour, you climb up to the mountain lake in Bad Säckingen, where the Alfred Haller Trail is the first single trail. This flowing path meanders gently downhill through the forest to Brennet, where the long transfer section to Wehr is on the agenda. You roll up and down away from the traffic northwards to Wehr and continue on local roads to the northern outskirts of Wehr. On a gravel road, you now climb up to Mettlen, where the next trail sequence begins. The trail rides down to the valley floor, with the intermediate transfer section also containing some crisp flow brakes. All in all, a worthwhile descent that feels far away from civilization.

Now it's time for the second part of the tour, the return trip to Bad Ssäckigen. But first you have to reach the Hotzenwald plateau. To do this, you climb up on gravel roads and occasionally on a singletrail section until just below the village of Strick - the starting point of the Hotzenpfad. This seemingly endless trail rides slightly downhill high above the Wehratal valley to the south. The path is narrow and also popular with hikers. Always dismount and stand to one side when crossing hikers! In this way, you roll towards the hamlet of Jungholz and then tackle the trail descent to Bad Säckingen. This leads along the Schöpfebach stream into the town center, with the last section riding along an asphalt road.

Note: The tour is located in Baden-Württemberg with the legal requirement of a two-meter rule. This tour contains elements that do not comply with this regulation. Rather, it reflects routes that are ridden by local mountain bikers. Compliance with the regulations is the responsibility of each individual mountain biker.

Ridden on 10.5.2025: The short trail (as described by Wolfgang Kleeb) is currently not overgrown. But the trail at km 20.1 is quite overgrown & the entrance is a bit difficult to find.

Did the tour today. The short trail from the mountain lake to Wehr is extremely overgrown with brambles in places, not recommended or only with a long-sleeved shirt. Can be easily avoided via the forest path. Even later, there are always places where the trail is overgrown. I didn't meet a single hiker, not even on the Hotzenpfad. It was very hot today though. All in all a nice tour.

Beautiful tour. Unfortunately, only half of the trail descent is possible from Mettlen. The rest of the trail has been diverted towards the dam (forest road) due to logging. The highlight of the tour is the Hotzenpfad.
