Golzentipp
Description
The tour starts in Tassenbach in Alta Pusteria, right next to the Austrian Federal Railways park & ride parking lot, which makes it easy to get there by train. From here, the route initially rides on asphalt along the Carnic Dolomites Road towards Sankt Oswald. There you meet the Carnic Dolomites Road again, cycle past Kartitsch and finally wind your way up to Kartitscher Sattel. After the saddle, you roll down a few meters in altitude on asphalt and reach Obertilliach in this way.
Here you leave the Carnic Dolomites Road and begin the ascent on the official Golzentipp circuit. Impressive panoramic views that are otherwise almost only found in the Western Alps are already opening up. The border between Austria and Italy along the Grosser Kinigat, the Porze and the Porzescharte is particularly breathtaking. The route continues past the Conny Alm to the reservoir and finally to the Golzentipp, where the last 100 meters have to be pushed. The Golzentipp is a unique panoramic mountain in this region: from here, you can see numerous striking peaks and rock formations, and on a clear day, the view stretches almost as far as Villach.
The descent from the summit begins with a challenging S2 to S3 level of difficulty and leads partly along washed-out paths. Afterwards, a real highlight awaits: the Bergwiesentrail. This gentle cross-country-style trail (difficulty S1) leads through larch forests to the Dorfberg. At the Dorfberg summit cross, the trail becomes more challenging again (S2, S3 in places) and rides up to the forest road above the Lesachtal valley. You cross this and take further trail sections on a historic path that finally rides back to Sankt Oswald. The last 100 meters in altitude are covered on gravel and you use the trail shortcuts along the Carnic Dolomites Road to return to the starting point in Tassenbach.
The ascent can be significantly shortened by using the Golzentipp cable car.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
