Sella Nevea - Kriegssteige

Canin (Sella Nevea)

The trail circuit on the Sella Nevea Pass with the support of the Kanin gondola lift is an absolute trail highlight in the Friuli/Venezia Giulia region.

Description

Start directly at the Sella Nevea Pass in the parking lot. The so-called "snow saddle" is home to a breathtaking ski area combined with an even more bizarre landscape. Over 100 years ago, there was a trench war here during the First World War. As a result, countless military paths have been carved into the rock in the region, which have been cleverly combined to create a trail highlight. At the beginning, the question arises as to whether to shuttle or pedal. It should be noted that the uphill to the Rifugio Celso Gilberti is really extreme and only feasible for the toughest riders. Everyone else takes the gondola and saves their energy for the downhill. Once you reach the Rifugio Celso Gilberti, you find yourself in a kind of basin. Surrounded by the entire Kanin massif, the first sightings of the trails can already be seen here.

The descent runs along Sentiero 635 to the cable car valley station. From difficulty S2 to S4 in places, everything is on offer here. Especially in wet conditions, the forest sections are extremely difficult to ride and can only be mastered by professionals. Once you arrive at the valley station, the gondola takes you uphill again and then past the Rifugio Celso Gilberti towards Sella Prevala (2067 meters above sea level). A ski slope in winter, a merciless gravel ramp in summer. Partly rideable, but mostly pushing, you fight your way up the few 100 meters to the saddle. At the saddle, you have a view as far as Slovenia into the Soča Valley towards Bovec, as well as the Sella Nevea Pass towards Italy. Continue along the 636er-Kriegssteig, which is in perfect condition, past the Caserme del Poviz back to the valley station of the gondola. At difficulty level S2, S3 in places, this is one of the region's trail highlights. A seemingly endless downhill is the perfect way to end the day.
