Cima di Terrarossa

Cima di Terrarossa

The Cima di Terrarossa is a breathtaking panoramic mountain in the middle of the Julian Alps and offers a technical trail descent, especially in the upper section, with a great chance of encountering an ibex.

Description

The tour starts directly in the Raccolana Valley at Piani di Sotto. From here, the route initially runs along the main road for a while on asphalt, then onto a small side road before returning to the main road in the direction of Sella Nevea, the so-called snow saddle, in the Kanin winter sports area. Even here, the massive rock faces are impressive and seem to be from another world. After crossing Sella Nevea, the ascent begins with medium to moderate gradients in the direction of Malga Montasio.

Shortly before Malga Montasio, turn right and ride on with some crisp climbs to Rifugio Giacomo di Brazza. The pushing and carrying section begins here. The bike is carried hundreds of meters up to the Cima di Terrarossa on an old war path from the First World War. At the summit, 2420 meters above sea level, the view is breathtaking. The Cima di Terrarossa is one of the highest and most impressive peaks in this region. To the south you can see the Kanin, to the north the imposing rock formations of the Julian and Carnic Alps - a view that leaves nothing to be desired.

The descent is just as impressive and proves to be extremely technical. From the bottom, it's hard to believe that a single meter can be ridden here, as the trail leads through a mixture of difficulty levels S2, S3 and sometimes massive S4 passages. Skillfully, you circle down the trail. Particularly interesting is the encounter with numerous ibex in this area, which are hardly shy - an encounter is almost guaranteed.

Back at the Rifugio Giacomo di Brazza, you follow some trail shortcuts downhill before branching off to Malga Montasio. The last trail section rides along a former war path. This begins with difficulty level S1 and later reaches S3, especially in the section on the rock face. From there, the trail continues downhill towards Piani di Là. Finally, a selective section of stairs leads downwards before you finish the tour.

Note on the tour: It is recommended to complete the tour outside of the hiking and main tourist season, as otherwise the number of hikers can be very high. Encounters with ibex are also more likely in the afternoon, as they retreat to the protective rock faces at midday.
