Teufelsmühle Advanced

Hahnenfalzhütte

At the end of the northernmost Black Forest valley are some of the most challenging trails in the region. Add to this a fantastic panorama and you have an impressive tour.

Description

The tour starts in the spa town of Bad Herrenalb, at the large parking lot on the outskirts of the town, but also rides past the train station with S-Bahn connection from Karlsruhe. The first ascent is the longest of the tour with around 600 meters in altitude, briefly interrupted by a fun first trail. After three quarters, you pass the Hahnenfalzhütte with its panoramic views towards Karlsruhe and refreshments (unfortunately only on Sundays). Once you have completed the ascent, the trail to the Hahnenfalzhütte begins and from there continues downhill as the Brudesweg: this is first bumpy, then partly blocked and in places damp and slippery, and a first indicator of the challenges to come. Uphill again, past the Hahnenfalzhütte and the previous trail entrance, and shortly afterwards the route turns right at ground level to the Langmartskopf. You don't even notice its unspectacular "summit" and the trail runs along the ridge between the Alb and Murg valleys. It slopes only slightly towards the Teufelsmühle, so you have to keep pedaling and, above all, avoid the boggy mud holes. At the end, the Teufelsmühle inn awaits with a snack.

The view from the Teufelsmühle lookout tower is magnificent, with the Murg Valley around 700 meters below. Now it gets challenging: blocked and with almost 30 hairpin bends, you pass the hang-glider launch site and the Michelsrank refuge. A gravel ascent continues to the Great Hole or the Devil's Chambers, a cave-like sandstone rock formation. All the trails so far have been a dress rehearsal for the next part: the steep path down to the chambers is peppered with high drops and tight hairpin bends. Those who ride everything here have something to live up to. After the Devil's Chambers, it gets a little easier. A flat gravel path then leads towards Risswasen and then briefly up onto the trail, which is first steep and then increasingly easier towards the Albtal hunting lodge, down to the bridge over the Alb.

From here, the route leads out of the valley towards the outdoor pool and then briefly into town on the main road, before a narrow paved path with hairpin bends to the left briefly challenges your uphill riding technique. Above the village, the route follows the edge of the forest towards the Falkenburg Clinic and the last few meters up to the Falkenstein with a great view over Bad Herrenalb. The last trails of the tour now lead down to the train station or the refreshment stop around the spa gardens.

Beware: If you don't have at least a solid command of single trail grade S2, you will be overwhelmed on several trails, and not just in sections.

Note: The tour is located in Baden-Württemberg with the legal requirement of a two-meter rule. This tour contains elements that do not comply with this regulation. Rather, it reflects routes that are ridden by local mountain bikers. Compliance with the regulations is the responsibility of each individual mountain biker.

A road rides up to the Teufelsmühle, so the route from the Langmartskopf to the Teufelsmühle is very busy at weekends. Apart from that, the path towards Teufelsmühle is definitely S3 and requires very good technique (narrow, blocked, mud holes, and mostly uphill).
The zig-zag path from the Teufelmühle is also S3 and requires a very good sense of balance and shifting the rear wheel.
The path to the Teufelkammer is steep, narrow and blocked (S3).
So if you can't ride S3, you will have to push on most of the (trail) Elevation losses.
You should be aware of this.
