Lac de Taney

Lac de Taney

The idyllic Lac de Taney is tucked away just above the former Chavalon power station in the southernmost tip of Valais. The tour boasts one of the most fun and attractive singletrail descents in the region around Monthey.

Description

The first 600 vertical meters from the starting point in Vouvry to the village of Miex are covered on the well-maintained mountain road or by post bus, which only runs a few times a day. At the parking lot just above Miex, the going gets tough: the gravel road up to the Col de Taney is mercilessly steep. Even with an e-mountainbike, this section is a feat of strength. This adds up to 400 meters in altitude before rolling down to Lac de Taney after the transition. There are three opportunities for refreshments in a restaurant here. Later, you roll along the idyllic mountain lake and push up a short distance to an inconspicuous forest clearing. This is the starting point of the super trail down to Evouettes. The upper section of the trail offers top-class flow fun and then meanders through the forest - flowy, fun and varied. The trail has all the ingredients you need for a first-class singletrail descent! The descent finally ends in the village of Les Evouettes, from where you can ride back to Vouvry on cycle paths.

Did the tour this Saturday. There's still some snow at the top but it's very easy to ride.

The forest path is very steep with an e-bike or very good fitness but doable. I decided to take the bike on my back and take the direct hiking trail up. It was quicker and more pleasant than pushing the bike the whole time.

The view from the lake is great and after the strenuous climb, it's perfect for taking a break and riding around the lake at a leisurely pace.

Then it's off on a single trail in the forest. Except for one or two sections of singletrail around the S2. In the lower third, there are a few hairpin bends and more technically demanding sections that I would definitely classify as S3. But they are few and easy to negotiate on foot by bike.

I had the misfortune that trees fell into the trail at one point, where you couldn't get through on a bike. I therefore had to do a climbing lap off the trail. The trees are on very steep and loose terrain, but I assume that these trees will soon be cleared away.

Was on the road on 21.06.23. Great tour as described by Winistörfer. Hard ascent from Pp due to gravel road. Thus up and down a few pushing passages. Restaurant stop at Chambres-Dortoir almost obligatory to enjoy the view and food. Food was very good. Had my Speci Enduro Expert Carbon 2014 with me. Awesome machine 😊. Would do the tour again.

Good riding up to Miex. The gravel road from Miex was then very steep, so we pushed. The lake is beautiful! Then a little up and down along the lake before descending through some technical stone passages. Great fun!

I rode the tour on 27.07.2021. The ascent from Vouvry is on the "main road" and is easily rideable up to the parking lot in Le Chable. From there, a gravel road leads up where cars are only allowed to ride with a permit and bikers would also be prohibited. There was actually a policeman standing there and when I asked him whether the ban also applied to bikers, he just said "je ferme mes yeux". Cool guy, I thought, and he probably thought I was going to walk anyway. From there, the path becomes extremely steep. Thanks to my good form, I made it to the lake riding with 3 breaks (two of them involuntary), with the front wheel feeling like it was in the air half the time. A hiker said that I was the first non-E-biker she had seen. A feat. The lake at the top is actually very beautiful and idyllic. There were a few uphill sections along the lake and the downhill section was also quite difficult at first. Soon, however, a super flow trail followed up to 1111, from there a meadow trail until it went into the forest again. In the forest, difficult and easy sections alternated. All in all, a great tour, but one that is neither easy up nor down.

I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill I'm always the last one by a long way.

No bike transport by Postbus Vouvry to Miex for the first 600m!!!
