Tour d'Anniviers

Tignousa (St-Luc, Val d'Anniviers)

With its glacier backdrop and many flowing trails, the Val d'Anniviers is a popular Valais side valley for mountain bikers. With the sensational high-altitude trail from the Hotel Weisshorn to Zinal and the descent from the Corne de Sorebois, the Tour d'Anniviers packs two of the highlights of the Val d'Anniviers into one route.

Description

The Tour d'Anniviers begins comfortably in the Postbus from Vissoie to St-Luc and then continues on the funicular to Tignousa. From here, you will need your own muscle power. Climb up a gravel path to the impressively situated Hôtel Weisshorn and from there take the sensational high-level trail into the Val de Zinal. The trail is easy to ride, but there are always more challenging sections. The panorama on this section with the Obergabelhorn, Matterhorn and Dent Blanche is fantastic. At Alp Barneuza, you descend on an agile singletrail to the valley floor at Mottec, where you take the road to the valley station of the Sorebois cable car in Zinal. Ideally, you should take the gondola lift up the next 800 meters in altitude because the subsequent ascent to the Corne de Sorebois is very steep and every ounce of remaining strength is useful. The descent from the Col de Sorebois to the Moiry reservoir is flowy, fast and fun, as is the section from the dam wall down to the valley floor. You then reach Grimentz on a rough but fairly wide trail, take the fun trail down to the valley floor and roll comfortably back to Vissoie via Mission.

Tip: From Mottec, you can take the fun, largely flat trail over to Grimentz and take the gondola lift to Sorebois here. This avoids the steep ascent on the Zinal side and also gives you the flowing trail to Grimentz.

I was out and about in the region in fall 2025. I can recommend this tour 100 percent and it offers everything your heart desires. Super trail from the Hotel Weisshorn, technical descent to Zinal, (built) flow trail down to the lake, a bit rougher to Grimentz and finally a fast natural trail to Mission. Like other commentators, I would recommend descending directly to Zinal instead of Mottec.

Sensational views along the side of the slope to Zinal. Mostly flowy, briefly technical, a few small counter-climbs, occasionally steep downhill and gravely, zigzagging in between.
The second part is technically much easier: From Zinal, take the gondola lift right up to the Espace Weisshorn, then a short and steep pushing section. Sensational descent to the reservoir and on to Grimentz and a flowing descent along the stream to Vissoie. Top day tour!

From Tignousa to point 2198 a lot of hikers, but wide path. After that, hikers and bikers are guided separately. The section from Hotel Weisshorn is an absolute dream trail! Great views, flowy, sometimes challenging (bumpy). The first section after Hotel Weisshorn is very steep. There are also a few uphill push sections. I continued at Alp Chiesso on the mountain trail (Sierre-Zinal). At point 2171 down to Zinal. A super trail here too. All the trees lying across have been cleared away. Short S3 zig-zag section at point 2171.

The last section from Espace Weisshorn is super steep (20-30%) and more ski slope than road. I preferred to shoulder the bike and walk up on the hiking trail. At the top of the map, the descent to Lac de Moiry is marked on the hiking trail, which is not very suitable (in good weather) as there are a lot of hikers on the trail. In the upper part, it is better to take the bike trail next door (not signposted). Unfortunately, there are no berms, which reduces the flow somewhat.

Tour ridden on July 11, 2025.

This tour has everything a freeride tour should offer:
A magnificent panorama with challenging climbs, followed by trails ranging from flow to very challenging (some of them only for very experienced bikers), the warning sign along the way can be agreed with!

The bridge under the dam is still not there, but there are two three planks for crossing, but you need balance..., the aforementioned variant with the short section on the pass road is safer.

Rode on 21.8. with e-bike (therefore without rail support at St. Luc).
A dream tour like you rarely experience. Lots of flow, always technically challenging (stage Le Chiesso 2210m - Mottec 1556m), super flow on the presumably new flow trails down from the Corne de Soirbois summit to the dam wall, also from Grimentz to Vissoie. Thanks for this great track!

Attention: the bridge a few meters below the dam is dismantled, no passage possible. Therefore, stay on the road for a few meters at the dam and then follow the red bike signs into the trail.

Mottec - Grimentz flat section currently closed due to construction work - I still managed to get through without any problems. Had a friendly chat with the excavator operator and thanked him for his excellent work. The trail should be officially open again in 3 days.

We did the tour on 08.07.23 starting in Zinal. The trails are very nice, after Lac de Moiry we had an encounter with a not-so-nice farmer's wife and had to skip part of the trail. From the Hotel Weisshorn we didn't ride to Mottec but directly to Zinal.

The new mountain railroad is now in operation in Zinal, so you can also get up to the espace Weisshorn from there. This means you can save yourself the "flat" trail to Grimentz.

02.07.20
The Sorebois cable car in Zinal is currently being rebuilt!
So take the flowing trail from Mottec on the left side of the valley to Grimentz and then the cable car.

25.07.18 the trail from Grimentz to Mission was closed.
