Chasseron
Description
The tour starts in the Jura village of Ste-Croix, which is easy to reach by train from Yverdon. However, the village is also easy to reach under your own steam, with the almost 600 meters in altitude covered on the road from Vuiteboeuf. The ascent from Ste-Croix to the Chasseron summit is easy to master. Pass the village of Les Rasses and follow the asphalt road to the mountain restaurant just below the summit. This is ideally reached on foot, as the panorama from up here is spectacular. At your feet lie Lake Neuchâtel and, further south, Lake Geneva, with the entire Vaud region beyond and the main Alpine ridge with the glaciated Mont Blanc on the horizon. The scenery can easily compete with that of the far better-known Chasseral, but the Chasseron is much less frequented.
The descent begins at the mountain restaurant, has a short counter-climb to Petites Roches after a few meters, but then takes a varied route across Jura meadows and fir forests on a direct route back to Ste-Croix. This is followed by a few meters on an asphalt road, after which the singletrail into the Gorges de Covatannes begins at the small sewage treatment plant. The spectacular route is easy to ride and turns into a forest path shortly before Vuiteboeuf. The return journey to Yverdon follows the signposted hiking routes through the agricultural hinterland. On hot summer days, we recommend a refreshing dip in Lake Neuchâtel in Yverdon.
Alternative: Ascent from Yverdon instead of taking the train under your own steam.
Tip: The tour to Creux-du-Van can be combined with the Chasseron tour by ascending through the Gorge de l'Areuse, then following the ridge to Chasseron and arriving in Yverdon through the Gorges de Cavatannes.

I did the tour from Noiraigue with two colleagues on October 11, 2023. We went through the Val de Travers to Buttes then up and at Prise Cosandier straight ahead on the forest path to the gorge at Noirvaux. Then up to the Mont de la Mayaz restaurant and on to Le Sollier and Les Avattes and then up the gravel path to Chasseron. Then lunch break and refreshments at the Hotel Chasseron. We continued in the direction of La Vaux-La Combaz-Les Rochats-La Barone to the Creux du Van. Then through the crater to La Ferme Robert and back to Noiraigue. Very nice bike tour, the first part is quiet and without hikers and bikers. From the Chasseron to the Creux du Van at the latest, there are more hikers and bikers. Wonderful views along the whole route, highly recommended. Route length: 65 km and 1600 m elevation gain. GPX data of the route available.
Hello grolimund
I would like to ride your tour. Can I download the GPX data somewhere?
Beautiful tour with wonderful views and lots of nice singletrail sections. The path through the gorge is nice and flowy and there were no hikers around 5pm today, Monday. This section is probably not recommended at the weekend as there is too much potential for conflict with hikers. After Vuiteboef there is no longer a turn-off via the railroad. After Vuiteboef station, turn right at the level crossing and then left again at the small cemetery just before Peney. You then return to the planned route. From Vuiteboef to Yverdon almost only forest roads but without traffic a comfortable finish.
Very nice view. Trail at the beginning with 2 somewhat more difficult sections, max S3, it's just a Jura ridge and therefore small blocked limestones. Then 80% of the trail down to Ste-Croix is a trail highway, not flowy but also not technically interesting. You lose a lot of meters very quickly. From Ste-Croix, the route through a gorge is very beautiful, but the trail is very easy and a bit boring for experienced bikers (S1).
We rode the tour today. Super condition. A tour worth recommending.
The train from Yverdon to St Croix is an experience.
Then a leisurely ascent to just before the summit. The last 50 m are very steep but rideable.
Great view and super trail down to the valley
Really highly recommended
Was on March 31, 2021. 1 meter of snow still lay in places on the ascent, but the road was cleared and thanks to the southern exposure the downhill was also snow-free. Unfortunately, about 1/4 of the downhill is road, but the ride through the gorge is brilliant. You can also start the tour at Essert sous Champvent or Vuiteboeuf station, where it's easier to park your car.
The tour is beautiful and the landscape impressive. I was glad that I had ridden up from Yverdon, otherwise it would probably have been too short for me. I had to push on the counter-climb between the Chasseron and the next hill. The downhill to St. Croix is technically quite a challenge. The descent through the gorge is brilliant and best done during the week.
Hey Alex
Do you have .gpx data of the tour ?
Best regards
Patrick
I did the tour on 2.6.2020. Recommended and all rideable. On the ascent, it is advisable to follow the traffic-free asphalt road and not take the hiking trail as per the tour. This saves some energy. The downhill to Ste Croix surprised me positively and the route to Vuiteboeuf is also well chosen, not difficult but very scenic (Gorges de Covatanne). In Vuiteboeuf you can enjoy a fine meal at the Hotel de l'Ours. From Vuiteboeuf to Yverdon it is only a few kilometers to go. Happy trails.
