Chasseral - Chaumont
Description
The trail starts at the Magglingenbahn mountain station. From here, you roll easily through the grounds of the Magglingen sports school and turn into the first short trail descent at the "end of the world". This serves primarily as a connection to the village of Orvin, where the actual ascent begins. On an initially asphalted, later gravel road, you climb steadily uphill onto the Jura ridge and approach the central square from the north. The surface remains largely gravel before asphalt takes over again over the last few meters - this is how you finally reach the summit of the Chasseral from the east.
From here, the long descent towards Neuchâtel begins. You follow the ridge over a mixture of single trails and bumpy Jura paths - with sections of varying difficulty. The lower section in particular offers flowing trails that lead directly to the Chaumont, Neuchâtel's local mountain. The Chaumont then offers various downhill options. This tour takes the classic route: the official bike route from the mountain station down to the city center. This route is known for its big jumps - some of them in the style of Canadian bike parks. Don't worry: all the features can also be bypassed, so that even less jump-happy mountain bikers can have fun. At the end, you wind your way through the forest to just above the valley station and from there you continue on a relaxed ride along local paths to Neuchâtel station - where you can take the train back to Biel.

Gefahren am 8. Juli 2026.
Empfehlenswert.
I rode the tour today. It was a wonderful overall experience, with great views and that perfect Jura vibe. I did find the first section of the descent after the Hotel Chasseral a bit of a letdown. Much of the hiking trail isn’t rideable; I would have appreciated a note about this in the tour description. From the Métairie onward, it gets fun and smooth again. Anyone (like me) who’d rather ride than push their bike could probably switch to the Swiss Mobility Bike Route No. 44 for about 8 kilometers starting from the Hotel Chasseral.
Beautiful tour. However, the end, the Chaumont Bike Park, is super extreme (double black, orange in trail forks). There are road and practically canyon gaps that are huge. If you don't quite manage them, you're done: free flight into the rock face. There are chicken lines, but sometimes it's not entirely clear which line is the chicken line. You fly up ramps that are a harmless table on one side, but a blatant gap jump on the right (or left). The problem is that there are no signs. So, please ride very carefully.
Rode on 28,4,25. Shortened by bus from biel station no. 70 to pres-d'orvin bellevue. Saves approx. 500 hm. Only room for 3 bikes, as long as no wheelchair or baby carriage wants to come along.
No more snowfields on the route
Rode on 6.4.25. There were still a few snowfields to cross towards the Chasseral. Scenically sensational tour, the descents also ok, even if you have to be patient after the Col de Chasseral and often have to push the bike for 10-15 minutes.
