Buljma
Description
The mountain bike tour starts in Jablanac, a charming little coastal village, from where you pedal steadily upwards on asphalt until you reach the coastal road. From there, the route rides along the historic pass road to Veliki Alan, one of the highest mountain passes in Croatia. This dry-stone road offers spectacular panoramic views, especially in the lower section.
Further up, you reach the mountain station of the former material ropeway, which was built by prisoners from the island of Goli Otok to be used for timber management. This extremely dangerous and ultimately uneconomical construction project was never put back into operation and today serves as a silent witness to history.
Past these historical remains, you then push or carry yourself to the summit of Buljma at 1451 meters above sea level. There, a magnificent mountain panorama opens up that is unparalleled in the Alpine region. The islands of Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag lie at your feet, while the turquoise blue water glistens in the sun.
The trail descent is ideal for bikers and leads down from the summit ridge between difficulty levels S1 and S2, before riding down the entire southern flank towards Jablanac on a historic path. In the area of the steep steps or the karst of Turska vrata, the trail becomes more challenging and reaches difficulty level S3 in places, with some of these passages having to be pushed or carried. The trail then becomes more flowy again and leads back to Jablanac, the starting point of the tour, via the coastal road.
The entire route is located in the Velebit National Park, for which an entrance ticket is required. In addition, you should take enough water with you on this tour, especially in the summer months, as the high temperatures during the descent should not be underestimated.
