Cofete
Description
The route starts in Morro Jable with a long stretch of road, first on asphalt, then on a hard-packed gravel road. You drive through the barren landscape and climb up to the Degollada de Agua Oveja (259 meters above sea level) with a great view of the wild coast with its 14-kilometre-long sandy beach. Continue along the road, now descending on the north side. This brings you to the village of Cofete. The detour down to the sandy beach is worthwhile, before returning via the Degollada de Cofete. This leads uphill via a single trail that is almost entirely rideable and not really steep at any point. This amazing trail winds its way up the mountain to the crossing at 347 meters above sea level. The descent back to Morro Jable is (unexpectedly) flowy, fast and varied and leads down almost to the road. A little above the road, keep left and roll along the trail slightly above the road until just before Morro Jable. Conclusion: A great and surprising singletrail tour through the wild mountains of Fuerteventura.
Note:
- The Degollada de Cofete can also be ridden in the opposite direction on a mountain bike. In this case, the ascent is also rideable throughout (apart from a few steps) and the descent is flowy and fun. On the ascent on the north side, the large house of Gustav Winter is clearly visible. There are legends surrounding this house that it was a Nazi retreat, that Hitler ran a secret submarine base here and much more. It's worth reading up a little on the subject here: villawinter.com/the_legend
