Donkey-Trail
Description
The starting point of the tour is Malveira da Serra on the south side of the Sintra Mountains. From here, you head up a small road to the Sintra Ridge. You could actually start the Donkey descent straight away, but we combine the trail with a descent on the north side. To do this, you climb up to the Monge summit, where the fun, varied trail, specially built by mountain bikers, begins down towards Colares. As soon as you reach the first houses, turn left through Penedo to the main road along the Atlantic. Follow the road until the road on the left rides up to the former Peninha monastery. This is situated high above the Atlantic with an excellent view. The trail that rides downhill from here is also excellent - the Donkey Trail. It rides down to the sea and is the trail highlight of the region. It ends at a small restaurant, from where you return to Malveira, first on a gravel road and then on a well-maintained road.

After the City Trail in Lisbon convinced us that this area must be a good biking region, we also took a look at this donkey trail today.
Conclusion: definitely a great bike region. You get an enormous amount of trail fun for the 2 x 400 m ascent. The northern part is wooded and overgrown, the southern part quite gravelly and rocky. Completely different trails, but all mostly man-made. They are also quite rutted, but still flowy and fun.
We parked at the Malveira da Serra football pitch. There is a large parking lot there and the ascent after the turn-off to the sea is a little shorter. At the sea, be sure to make a detour to the small sandy beach. If you like the waves and the cold water, take your swimming trunks with you.
Ah yes, and at Penedo you ride past a small restaurant where you can treat yourself to something to drink and eat. But of course I don't know if it's always open. We were there on a Saturday.
The Monge hill is littered with trails. There are always numerous turn-offs that invite you to take a second tour...
The region around Sintra and Portugal in general is really worth a bike trip. The Swiss company www.mountainbike-portugal.ch offers the "Portugal SUL" tour, which starts in this unique area. The trails described are great - but there are many more that we are very familiar with. Come with us to Portugal - the spring and fall tours still have places available.
