Ghilardona-Trails
Description
From Massarosa, you ride uphill on the country road toward Pitoro, where you turn left onto a narrow path that leads to the summit of Monte Ghilardona. Thanks to a large antenna, the summit is easily visible from a distance, though the limited space at the highest point does not allow for a sweeping panoramic view. However, two first-class single-track descents start right at the summit; for the first option, take the trail on the right. This varied S2 trail winds down the north side and ends near the road leading back to Pitoro. You then ride up a second time to Monte Ghilardona and this time choose the left option, the “Pico Trail.” This trail is exceptionally well-laid out, especially in the upper section, then runs for a short stretch on a gravel road before continuing on the right-hand side. The beautifully laid-out trail was once built by mountain bikers—or at least significantly upgraded—but could certainly use some maintenance now. It still rides smoothly, though the built jumps no longer inspire much confidence. The “Pico Trail” eventually leads down to the first houses of Massarosa.
