The route over the Kamplnock, combined with the Lammersdorfer Berg, offers a scenic and impressive crossing above Lake Millstatt. This tour is best undertaken outside of peak travel seasons and on weekdays.

Description

The ride starts in Millstatt, right on the lakeshore. From there, you climb meter by meter on asphalt toward Obermillstätter Strasse. Follow this road for a while before tackling the uphill climb to the Lammersdorfer Hütte in the hamlet of Lammersdorf. With some excellent views along the way, you steadily pedal uphill on asphalt through moderate to steep gradients until you reach the Lammersdorfer Hütte. Passing the hut, you’ll now be riding entirely above the tree line. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a very impressive view of Lake Millstatt and toward the Dobratsch Nature Park. Eventually, you’ll reach Lammersdorfer Berg, which you’ll circle around. The gravel road then ends, and you’ll switch to a singletrack. Here lies the absolute highlight of the tour: an alpine traverse featuring uphill and downhill sections—with the descent sections rated S1 and S2 in difficulty—leading directly to the Kamplnock at 2,101 meters above sea level. The view from this point is particularly expansive when visibility is good. The view sweeps north to the Salzburg, Lungau, and Carinthian Nockberge mountains, west to the Hohe Tauern, and south to the Weissensee Nature Park and the Dobratsch. This is also where the main descent begins. Between difficulty levels S2 and S3, there are several key sections to navigate, which can be quite demanding in the upper section. The stairs, combined with the slate slabs, should not be underestimated. The route then becomes somewhat smoother as it heads toward the Millstätter Hütte, where a stop for refreshments is recommended. Subsequently, the official Millstätter Trail leads steadily downhill at difficulty levels S1 and S2. The middle section is quite challenging at difficulty level S3, before the route finally leads back to the starting point via easy forest and meadow trails. In summary, this is a varied, scenically impressive, and at times very technical tour. However, it should be undertaken outside of vacation periods, weekends, and holidays, as the motor vehicle traffic to the Lammersdorfer Hut should not be underestimated.
