Monte Argentario Supertrail-Tour
Description
From the outskirts of Orbetello, you cross the dam over the lagoon and then climb along side roads past an old monastery to the telegraph pole on the highest point of Monte Argentario. A short time later, the impressive descent begins, with the singletrail initially riding partly through sparse woodland. The ground becomes stonier and the trail rides along an increasingly narrow ridge over the rugged rocks. Around 500 challenging Elevation losses are accumulated in a constant alternation of grippy rock and loose stones, with a direct view of the sea below. An up and down road takes you to above Porto Ercole, where you tackle the ascent back to Monte Argentario. The little road is quite steep in places, but you soon reach the top again and tackle the second part of the tour.
After crossing the tarmac road, the route descends along a firebreak and soon turns right onto the Madonnina Trail, a fun trail through the dense scrubland created by locals. A counter-climb on a well-maintained gravel road brings you to the final descent. This winds through open terrain over a ridge and ends at the first houses. Another trail continues the ride right down to the sea at Pozzarello. Return to the starting point by following the cycle path or a short stretch of road.
