Trieste Panorama-Trail

Triest

The circuit around Trieste along the legendary ridge via the Strada Vicentina, Monte Belvedere and the legendary return trip via the Grand Canal covers pretty much everything a biker's heart desires.

Description

It should be noted that if you arrive in Trieste by car, it should be parked slightly outside the city. The tour therefore starts south of Prosecco. Initially, the route is very relaxed, but with stunning panoramic views along the Strada Vicentina, alternating between gravel, asphalt and trails. You should also focus on this mix for the entire circuit, although it should be noted in advance that e-bikers definitely have the clear advantage here on the uphill and downhill sections. Biobikers with good basic fitness and stamina will also get their money's worth. Along the ridge, you will pass countless military installations and positions from the First and Second World Wars, as well as countless lost places that have emerged over the course of time due to the heavy settlement around Trieste. The trails can all be categorized between S1 and S2 at the start. The first serious downhill is to be tackled from Maj towards the north. Here it becomes very clear that there is a strong MTB scene in Trieste. The Trebiciano trail has all the characteristics. The route then continues towards Monte Calvo, past and back past some fenced-in donkeys, and on to Grotta Nera. Past this, you pedal along the entire ridge with an absolute dream backdrop of Trieste and the Mediterranean. You then wind your way steadily down a downhill with a difficulty of S1, occasionally S2, to the Rifugio Mario Premuda, which is located at the end of the Canal Premuda. The downhill is a real treat. The descent on the loose gravel, combined with hairpin bends, is an interesting and challenging change of pace.

The route continues to San Giuseppe della Chiusa and back onto the cycle path, which was built on a former railroad line. You cross the southern slopes with a perfect gradient and elevation profile and enter the urban world of Trieste on the next downhill. Difficulty level S2/S3 is required here, whereby the trail is somewhat slippery due to the soil, especially after rainfall or wet periods of vegetation. The next ascent is not long in coming and the route climbs past Santa Maria Maddalena Inferiore and then back onto the official railroad line, which has been converted into a cycle path and then through Trieste. Passing the huge harbor is the best alternative to get through here. It would be possible to take a shortcut directly through the city, but you have to be prepared for heavy traffic and a few road crossings. In the heart of Trieste, you then come to the Grand Canal. This is the former imperial area of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This has been perfectly incorporated and still offers a magnificent view of the Mediterranean and the historic buildings. The route then takes you past the historic Trieste railroad station, along the coast with a Mediterranean flair and a final climb back to Prosecco.

In summary, a very impressive and varied tour that can be ridden almost all year round. However, the summer months from mid-June to September are not really suitable for this circular tour, as the high temperatures, tourism and heavy traffic are not really inviting. During the rest of the year, the tour is perfect for a cross-country tour or a full E-MTB tour.
