Slavnik
Description
The ascent from Trieste city center to the Slavik is a test of patience: it is a whopping 29 kilometers long! The first part runs along an old railroad track, which makes for a very pleasant climb. At Kozina, the path switches to a gravel road that rides through wooded areas and has a similarly moderate ascent. Only towards the end of the ascent does the route become somewhat rougher. In total, you climb a little over 1000 meters in altitude, although the ascent is very pleasant overall. The ridge is not wooded, which allows for a great view over the Trieste region, southern Slovenia and the northern area of Rijeka in Croatia.
The descent rides in a similar direction, but a little further south, back to Trieste. Immediately after the summit region, you turn left onto a flowy, varied and very long singletrail that takes you to Presnica. This is followed by a combination of small roads, gravel paths and flowing single trails to Socerb, where the castle rises high above the city center of Trieste. This small village is the starting point for the fantastic finale of the tour, consisting of bike trails built by locals. These are fun and winding and end at the country road. From there, the trail leads down to the huge petrol and oil depots and you finally reach the first houses of Trieste. The route back to the port is less appealing due to the traffic, but the end of the tour makes up for everything.
Conclusion: A classic for anyone traveling in the Trieste region!
