Trieste Grenz-Trails
Description
The route begins (like many bike rides in Trieste) on the former railroad track, which you follow uphill. Shortly before this turns into a small asphalt road, you turn left and reach Krvavi Potok, where you have already crossed the border into Slovenia unnoticed. A small road continues up to Jirmanec (670 meters above sea level) with a large radio antenna and a small inn. This is the highest point of the tour and the end of a 24-kilometre ascent.
The first of several singletrail descents, the Kokos Trail, starts directly on the gravel road and winds quickly and variedly through the dense forest. You feel like you're out in the wilderness until you reach a road with a casino and numerous buildings with stores right next to customs. After crossing the road, you plunge back into the wilderness. What follows is a varied and sporty cross-country-style ride. Great trail sections alternate with gravel passages, and short climbs are followed by rapid descents and flowing transfer sections. The route always follows the state border as far as Trebiciano.
From there, you climb up to the ridge on the outskirts of Trieste, where you have a great view of the city center and the bay. A crisp, flowing final section leads down almost to the city center. The last few meters run along a local road to end the tour in the famous old town of Trieste.
