Esslinger Trail-Kombi

Kappelberg

Between Katzenkopf and Kappelberg near Esslingen, a little east of Stuttgart, you will find numerous official MTB trails that are built to an above-average standard.

Description

The tour ideally starts in Fellbach, east of Stuttgart's city center, from where it is easy to get there via cycle paths or the S-Bahn (S2). It is also possible to start the tour in Esslingen and ride up from there to the tennis courts at Katharinenlinde.

From Fellbach, you cycle up a small road to Esslinger Tor, where the first descent begins with the (signposted) Kamm Trail. The trail is rooty, winding and varied. It gives a good foretaste of the style that characterizes the tour. The ridge trail leads into a gravel road on which you climb up to the Dirty Dancing Trail. The Dirty Dancing Trail is smoother and more agile than its predecessor, but above all longer. A little below the Naturfreundehaus, you will find yourself on a small road that forms the basis for the next ascent.

The small road rides up to the ridge and turns into a gravel road. Follow this until a marked bike trail branches off to the right. Its name: "Des Kaisers Homy". Cycle along the flat path through the forest, turn back onto a gravel road and reach a crossroads. Several bike trails start here, in this case a loop on the Harry Popper Trail. The route descends quickly and smoothly to Fellbach and back to the aforementioned crossroads on gravel roads.

Now you climb up to the Kernenturm on gravel roads. If you want, you can climb the steep stairs up to the viewing platform, but apart from numerous treetops, there is not much to see from the top. It is more attractive to turn directly into the descent. The trail is again marked as an MTB route, this time you are on "Rapunzel's Trail". This takes you back to the previous ascent route, but then immediately turn left onto the path called "Des Kaisers Trail". This long, relatively flat trail leads south to the Katzenkopf with a descent that rides between the disposal station and quarry to the road between Esslingen and Stetten.

Finally, the return journey to Fellbach is on the agenda. You soon turn into the Kickstarter Trail. Incidentally, this is the only descent on the route that is not officially marked as an MTB route. The fast and winding trail, like the Harry Popper Trail before it, rides to Fellbach. A gravel road leads up to Katharinenhöhe and on to Egelseer Heide. On a mixture of gravel roads and trails, you finally reach the Kappelberg with a fantastic view of Stuttgart with the Benz factories and the Bundesliga stadium right at your feet. More interesting than the view, however, is the final descent. It goes by the name of "Bullet Proof" and winds its way down a winding and sometimes steep descent. The last section back to Fellbach leads along the asphalt road on which you initially rode up.

Conclusion: A great trail tour with numerous MTB routes that are fun and varied. If you want to ride good trails in Stuttgart, you should pay attention to this region.
