Sulzberg – Bregenzerach
Description
The tour can be divided into two sections: The asphalt ascent to Oberreute and the trail return via Sulzberg. The first is quickly told: It rides up and down country roads, mainly uphill, to Oberreute. The route has little traffic and often rides on cycle paths. In Oberreute, you then climb up to the ridge of the Sulzberg. Now you have already covered 28 kilometers, almost exclusively on asphalt.
At Sulzberg, the character changes. The focus is now on trails. The rooty path over the ridge is adorned with numerous no-biking signs, and you could bypass it on a parallel gravel road. The trail takes you to the village of Sulzberg and after the village you head onto the next trail (without prohibition signs). The flowing and varied trail leads to the hamlet of Doren and from there down to the banks of the Bregenzerach on a mix of trail and gravel road.
Here you head back onto the trail along the riverbank towards Bregenz. It begins as a simple gravel path, but then becomes a trail. The path rides along the route of the former Bregenzerwald railroad, but is no longer maintained. Again and again you have to pass fallen trees, once even a small rockfall (a few meters, but therefore not suitable with a heavy e-bike). Between the "flow brakes", the path is great to ride in a wild landscape. This way you reach the village of Kennelbach and return to the center of Bregenz on cycle paths.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

I rode the route on June 15, 2026, on an e-bike. The climb isn’t very pleasant, since, as I mentioned, it’s all on a paved road. Unfortunately, the section along the Bregenzerach is quite difficult due to the fallen trees. At the rockfall, you have to carry the e-bike.
Trail part over the Sulzberg ridden on 14. 5. 25.
Insight 1: even at 9 a.m. there are already hikers on the forbidden trail who give you a dirty look.
Insight 2: the felt at least 50 "flow brakes" along the Bregenzerach are tedious, but the landscape and the trail are compensation enough.
