Staufen

Staufen mit Dornbirn und dem Bodensee im Hintergrund

The Staufen is Dornbirn's local mountain and is not really accessible by mountain bike. However, if you approach the mountain from the Hohenems side, you can combine the ascent to the summit with a wonderful and rewarding single trail tour.

Description

The ascent from Hohenems to Berggasthaus Schuttannen is mercilessly steep. Although it always rides on the asphalt road, the gradient is exasperating. On this section, some people have already cursed, but they have all arrived. From Schuttannen, the summit assault on the Staufen awaits. To do this, you climb up to the ridge on a gravel road, leave your bike here and walk the remaining 200 meters to the summit. None of the trails on the Staufen are rideable, so the bike depot is the more clever option. However, the ascent to the summit on foot is a must because of the panoramic views of the Säntis, Appenzellerland and Lake Constance alone.

Back to Schuttannen, follow the ascent route. There is a trail option over the ridge and along the valley floor up to the mountain inn, but there are plenty of trails later on the tour. Instead, you climb from Schuttannen on the gravel road up to Schuttanneneck, the culmination point of the tour. Just after the ski lift station, the downhill trail branches off to the left. Follow this over the meadowy terrain, then in the forest, sometimes fast and flowy, then a little bumpy again. This is how it goes down to a fork in the gravel road. Now it's time to climb a few meters before turning right onto the next trail. This is steep and tricky in the lower part. Eventually you reach a gravel road, which you follow downhill until the Eseltrepple begins on the right - a long, fun and varied single trail almost as far as Hohenems. For the last few meters, you finally roll down a gravel road before toasting the route on the pretty village square in the historic town center.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

I rode the tour yesterday, great 1st trail. Unfortunately, the second trail after the short climb on the gravel road was closed due to a landslide. As I didn't know whether it was possible to get through, I went down the gravel road.
If anyone knows when the trail will be open again, please let me know.

Rode the e-bike today - it makes the steep ascent much more relaxed.

Unfortunately, the first quarter of the trail is totally destroyed by herds of cows. You have to fight your way through ankle-deep mud with cow poo. It's best to rummage through it vigorously and hopefully not have to dismount. The hiking trail is almost invisible.

The other trails are fine. There are also some tricky sections.
