Hohe Kugel

Hohe Kugel (Vorarlberg)

The Hohe Kugel is one of the most striking panoramic mountains in the Bregenzerwald and also an excellent mountain bike destination. This extraordinary route starts in Dornbirn with the ascent through the wild Schaufelschlucht gorge and the first-class singletrail descent to Klaus near Rankweil. For the return journey to Dornbirn, take the train.

Description

The ascent from Dornbirn in the direction of Hohe Kugel begins on the outskirts of the village at the valley station of the Karren cable car. Now follow the little road to the mountain village of Ebnit. The road is steep in places but a scenic experience. This begins at Staufensee lake, followed by the phenomenal passage through Schaufelschlucht gorge. This is how you reach Ebnit, and this is where the hard part of the ascent begins. The gravel path to the Emser Hütte is so steep that even an e-mountain bike requires a good amount of muscle power. Shortly after the Emserhütte hut, there is a short but steep carrying section with a high alpine character in places. This section is the reason why the route is only partially recommended for e-mountain bikers. Otherwise, the tour would actually be very suitable for e-mountain bikers. After the carrying passage, you reach the mountain ridge and a little later the Kühboden. Now we recommend a short detour up to the summit of the Hohe Kugel with its wonderful view of the Rhine Valley, eastern Switzerland and Lake Constance. A short gravel road descent later, you reach the Treietpass, the start of the long singletrail descent to Viktorsberg. To get there, you push up another 100 meters in altitude on a trail to the ridge. If you don't want to do this, head straight down the trail and you will also reach the ridge later on. The singletrail descent is first-class and rides smoothly and variedly all the way to Viktorsberg. Now comes the second part of the descent, which takes you (undiminished on singletrails) to the village of Fraxern and then on a mixture of small roads, gravel paths and singletrails to Klaus. Conclusion: The descent is one of the best trails in the Bregenzerwald. For the return trip to Dornbirn, you should ideally take the train or follow the cycle paths via Hohenems to the center of Dornbirn.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

We rode the tour in July. The ascent up to the huts is very nice. Shortly afterwards, the pushing, carrying passage begins. The first descent is not feasible for inexperienced riders and in wet conditions. After another pushing passage it is rideable. The view is very nice. We had rain and it was damp - at least for me as an experienced biker, not everything was rideable.

Absolutely brilliant trails. Very high proportion of downhill trails, the upper section is quite challenging in wet conditions (lots of roots), after which the trail becomes very fun and flowy.
I ride the tour from St. Arbogast (Klus). Very good training, as the ascent from here is approx. 1300 m in one go.
Top tour, absolutely recommended...

Rode today on Sunday in the best weather - and although all the huts were quite busy, I didn't meet a single hiker on the trails!

Despite the e-bike, it was very strenuous, and not just because of the pushing sections.
Great trails downhill, everything was easy to ride, the grading was right.

Thanks for the great tour.

Rode the tour yesterday. 23.04.2022 from Diepoldsau.
Still had a few patches of snow. View is brilliant.
It is a great tour. The climbs are steep but rideable. The sliding passages are very scenic. You get the feeling of a high alpine tour.
The trails are some of the best in this area. And all rideable.
Thanks to the tour tinkerer.

Note: you can also start the tour very easily and uncomplicated from Klaus and pedal up to Fraxern ... as a "round trip" but with Dornbirn / ebnit gorge very nice ...
